Lirc Issue, Fedora 10, PRV250, Intermitant Delay with remote sends in MythTV

Hi all,

I just did a yum upgrade in Fedora 10 yesterday with a PVR250 as the remote input. Now intermittantly (10% of the time), my remote codes have about a 30 second delay before MythTV responds (they will stack up, then process very quickly). With irw up, the response is instant in irw, yet MythTV, in about 30 seconds, the action (or stacked up actions) happens. Once again, this is only about 10% of the time I notice this, 90% of the time MythTV is real time processing my remote requests. Both lirc and MythTV were updated with my system update.

I don't think it is LIRC because irw is processing the commands instantly. I am going to see what the cpu load is, but I suspect this is not the issue.

Anybody else seeing this?

Yes, I'm still seeing this same behavior on occasion. Although, the
incidence of it happening is greatly diminished now. Before, it could be
seen and duplicated within a couple of minutes of starting any
recording. Now, it seems to be more sporadic.

The system is a separate frontend. Both the backend and frontend are on
Fedora 10 using the same mythbackend version as above. The frontend
system is running Gnome desktop rather than XFCE. I have completely
uninstalled the X and gnome screensavers. The CPU usage stays around
15-20%. The keyboard can clear the problem within a second or two and
commercial skip will also clear the logjam. I have checked and noticed
IRW responds immediately to the remote button presses.

By quoting the tail end of that thread, I meant you should try running
/with/ and /without/ gnome-screensaver active (restarting the frontend
after activating/deactivating the screensaver). If there's a change in
the behavior without the screensaver active, please let me know. If
it's the same with or without the screensaver, then it's some issue
completely unrelated to the screensaver.

I have the problem with or without a screen saver installed (and or running), thanks for the thread link (I was searching for "lirc delay", and didn't get a hit in the archive, or I would have seen that thread (if I just searched "remote delay" instead :( ).

Anyways, I suspect there is some relation to that thread with the issue I am having. I will hypothesize that there is a combination of things in GNOME (or Fedora 10) that could be causing this. I'm a going to try a serial receiver, and then, perhaps KDE and to try to root this out. Intermittant errors are really annoying.

Is anybody else seeing this? Please note:
1. Recent system update <= 1 month (yes/no)
2. Linux distro
3. X display (Gnome, KDE..etc) in use
4. Remote input (PVRxxx, serial..etc)
5. MythTV build (mythfrontend --version)

The problem started for me back on Fedora 9 around about Oct 2008. It
seemed to coincide with the addition of a replacement video card.
However, that was not specifically verified as there were numerous
system updates. It was not possible to pinpoint any specific culprits as
I have not been able to consistently duplicate the problem. It was more
consistently observable running XFCE.
> 2. Linux distro
Currently running Fedora 10.
> 3. X display (Gnome, KDE..etc) in use
Gnome at the moment. No screen savers installed. The problem "seemed" to
be more prevalent when running XFCE.
> 4. Remote input (PVRxxx, serial..etc)
The remote input is a serial (Tira2) on the DB9 connector. I've toyed
with the idea of trying a PVR250 just for the remote functionality to
see if the problem still exists. If someone can verify the problem using
a PVRxxx IR receiver that would help me avoid having to pull two systems
apart to switch a PVR card.
> 5. MythTV build (mythfrontend --version)
My system is set up as a separate frontend/backend system. I have a
second frontend running on a desktop that I have not seen the problem
on. However, that system doesn't get used as heavily to view TV in the
same way the main frontend does and the remote is more of a nuisance (or
testing) rather than the main means of input.

Re: Lirc Issue, Fedora 10, PRV250, Intermitant Delay with remote sends in MythTV [In reply to]

Ref: Thread concerning response delay (intermittent) in mythfrontend.

I have mythfrontend that has this problem. The Mythbuntu 8.10 on
partition 3 experiences the problem (occasionally I push the remote
button, for example, but nothing happens for a few moments or so.
Eventually the remote starts working again. I sshed into the box and
irw always seems to be instantly responsive)

On this same box (same hardware) on Partition 1, I have a frontend
based on Mythbuntu 8.04.2. As near as I can tell 8.04.2 doesn't
experience this problem.

In response to the request for into, here's the answers for the 8.04.2
FE installation (Doesn't have Problem):
1. Yes, updated to today
2. Mythbuntu 8.04.2 2.6.24-23-generic
3. Gnome (desktop installed from Mythbuntu Control Centre menu selection)
Screensaver is active, causes not problem.
4. Remote is StreamZap USB selected from Mythbuntu Control Centre.
5.
lj [at] lian:~$ mythfrontend --version
Please include all output in bug reports.

On the Mythbuntu 8.10 (The one with the remote button delay, this
installation has the problem.)
1. Yes, updated to today
2. Mythbuntu 8.10 2.6.27-11-generic
3. Gnome (desktop installed from Mythbuntu Control Centre menu selection)
Screensaver is not active.
4. Remote is StreamZap USB selected from Mythbuntu Control Centre.
(same as 8.04.2 installation on same box)
