What kind of tuner card do you have, analog (V4L/bttv) or hardware-encoder (PVR-x50/ivtv)? In either case, make sure your drivers have properly loaded. Is it possible that /dev/video0 is not the correct device for you? Some systems default to /dev/v4l/video0. That's about it... either your driver isn't loaded properly, or you're trying to use the wrong device file. -JAC
