Weird slowness with LIRC ...

Weird slowness with LIRC ...

Hi

I'm facing something very weird with LIRC ..

I have it perfectly working with mythfrontend.

If I press the down arrow on my remote it scroll the cursor down as it should...
That if I use a completely new database profile.

After I change the option for playback however, not watching TV, just
in the main menu, using the remote will scroll down however, it will
only refresh the screen only every 2 seconds or so.
So say you cursor is on the first line, you press down arrow on the
remote (which send the command "Down" via LIRC) and hold the key, the
cursor will only appear after a few seconds to like the 5th items.

Keep holding it and it's now on the 10th etc.. You don't see the
cursor going down on every single option.

Mind you, if it's the first time I start mythfrontend, then it works fine ...

any ideas?
It's very frustrating when you want to go down the list of all the
recordings , maks it difficult to control the menu.

Sounds similar to my problem in the thread "Can HDMI Make EPG Navigation
Sluggish?"

Except that using the keyboard gives me perfectly fast browsing.
It's only over LIRC that it happens

I'm not sure if it's in any way related, but I have noticed that the
response to commands from the remote are far slower than from the
keyboard.

The other day when I was checking CPU usage during playback (using top),
I noticed that the "gnome-screensaver" process was taking some CPU time.
After digging deeper, I found that this wasn't just during playback, but
whenever the remote control was used.

From main menu of the frontend, just hold the down button on your
remote. I find that "gnome-screensaver" can take up to 35% CPU time and
"Xorg" takes up to 50%. When using the keyboard, "Xorg" takes about %5,
and "gnome-screensaver" takes nothing.

Just checked and it's exactly what is happening on my system !

gnome-screensaver starts to take around 30% of the CPU time and Xorg 33%

Any ideas what could be happening there?

Sorry, not a clue, I don't know the code at all.

I'm going to try the same with the LIRC test client IRW
(http://www.lirc.org/html/irw.html) and see if it's the same. If IRW
does not cause the same strange CPU usage, then I would assume it's
somewhere in the Myth code, but I wouldn't know where to start looking.

Just tried that.

gnome-xscreensaver only appears when myth is running.

It doesn't show up if you close mythfrontend...

lirw or xine is the same..

the problem only occurs when mythfrontend is started

I switched to KDE in order to remove gnome specific issues.

When pressing the down arrow key X uses around 35% of CPU still, but
no more gnome-screensaver .

However it is still just as slow to refresh the screen...

Definitely an issue with mythfrontrend provided by mythbuntu :(

Allright, this issue doesn't happen if you use the GANT theme. Was
using mythbuntu theme before ...

Yes, I see. My hassles were regardless of input.

BTW, the issues I had were resolved once I sorted out the display
resolution and rendering.

It's purely a LIRC issue for me also.

Incidentally, I've been running my display with 1980 X 1200 @ 50Hz over
HDMI forever (12 months). The EPG guide isn't lightning fast, but it's
not unacceptable. Though it is considerably slower using the remote when
compared to the keyboard, again with all the symptoms described on this
thread of high CPU usage.

To add to the weirdness.

Today I rebooted the frontend, and the remote was working perfectly,
with the cursor scrolling quickly etc...

I then quitted mythfrontend and restarted it and the issue reappeared...

Go wonder ..

mythfrontend, 515 for mythbackend, but 145 for lirc_dev. That doesn't
look right to me, but I don't have any baseline to compare.

Well, I don't know how long your PC has been up and that just shows
how long this process has been running

The man page indicates that is how much time is spent in CPU, not time
elapsed. Makes sense to me, otherwise all of the daemons that run at
boot would have the same time +/- a few seconds.

I have a similar issue. When I press the remote, it takes 100% CPU for 2
seconds and then it goes to the next item.

When I press fast 3 times, then it takes 2 seconds and then jumps 3
items at once.

It only happens with high resolution (1920x1080), so I did not think
it's a LIRC issue.

Then I updated from X server 1.3 to 1.4 and now navigating is very fast
again, but every 8-10 items, it pauses again for a few seconds and takes
100% CPU, before it continues.

So, it's better, but not solved.

Using the QT painter, it's always slow.

Now I am thinking, it's an X server or OpenGL issue.

Sorry for the late answer. I get it with both. And as I said: It got
better when I upgraded xorg-server from 1.3.x to 1.4.x.
