XvMC, SD LiveTV/Playback, Error Messages.

In an effort to fix stuttering playback in both SD LiveTV and recorded
programs---tried Slim, CPU+, CPU- playback profiles to no avail---I
created a custom profile to use XvMC exclusively. The config looks
like:

if rez > 0 0 -> XvMC

And it seems to work wonderfully. However, I get copious amount of
NVP: prebuffering pause and other messages everytime I do something on
the front end (e.g., skip forward, display the on-screen menu, display
the program info, etc.). This didn't really happen before, at least
not to this extent. Here's an excerpt of the messages:

2008-08-06 08:34:16.074 NVP: prebuffering pause

I've followed the instruction on the XvMC wiki page as well as
searched the archives for possible solutions.

Here are some info on the system:

OS: Mythbuntu 8.04.1 32-bit latest updates
Graphics Card: NVidia GeForce FX5200 PCI
Tuner: Hauppauge PVR-500
CPU: AMD Phenom Quad Core
RAM: 4GB
MB: Asus M3A
TV: Old CRT Toshiba 27" (forget the model #)

Relevant xorg.conf:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Generic Video Card"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "DPI" "100x100"
Option "UseEvents" "true"
Option "XvmcUsesTextures" "false"
Option "NVAGP" "1"
Option "AddARGBVisuals" "1"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "1"
Option "NoLogo" "1"
#Option "UseDisplayDevice" "TV"
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "TV"
Option "TVOutFormat" "SVIDEO"
Option "TVStandard" "NTSC-M"
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disabled"
EndSection

"Sync To VBlank" settings are disabled on the video card as instructed
in the wiki page.

My concern is that these messages will fill up the / and /var
partition---they're one and the same---as time progresses just from
normal usage. And I'd like to know what's causing them in my case
because I've had some unexplained hangs and freezes in the past few
days.

Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks.

I have Fedora 9 and an Asus P1-AH2 with an Nvidia 6150 onboard
graphics chip and 64-bit AMD CPU, so your mileage may vary, but how
about your /etc/X11/XvMCConfig file? Did you configure it per
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/XvMC?

# ls -al /etc/X11/XvMCConfig
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 27 2008-08-04 12:55 /etc/X11/XvMCConfig

# more /etc/X11/XvMCConfig
libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1

# find / -name libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1
/usr/lib64/nvidia-graphics-173.14.12/libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1

Try turning off "Use OpenGL..." in the TV Playback settings near the first
few screens. I had this on with my XvMC profile and my CPU spiked to 130%
but with it off, 40%

Kevin:

It is off. I didn't notice any difference with it off or on in terms
of CPU usage and frequency of those prebuffering pause messages,
actually; but, it's off now.

Thanks.

Mache:

Yes, that file's properly set up.

$ cat XvMCConfig
libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1
$ ls -l /usr/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 2008-07-26 21:53
/usr/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1 -> libXvMCNVIDIA.so.169.12
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 2008-07-26 21:53

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 139604 2008-07-09 09:05 /usr/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA.so.169.12

Thanks.

Re: XvMC, SD LiveTV/Playback, Error Messages. [In reply to]

<bump>

Any more tips, suggestions? It's not a critical problem as the
messages don't appear as long as leave the playback alone (i.e., I
don't display any menu, program info, skip forward, etc.). But, I'd
like to know the reasons nevertheless. There shouldn't be any lack of
resources. The CPU is over 90% idle, plenty of RAM/swap, no network
lag as it's an BE/FE combo box, disks are SATA2/300's and it's only
playing back SD recording/LiveTV. The only thing I can think of is
that I'm using JFS over LVM for the Myth recording partition. Could
LVM really be the bottleneck?

Thanks in advance for your help.

One more data point, the "NVP: Prebuffering pause" messages coincide
with these entries in /var/log/messages:

Aug 9 21:50:35 daffy kernel: [ 305.970824] rtc: lost 1 interrupts
Aug 9 21:50:35 daffy kernel: [ 305.975179] rtc: lost 1 interrupts
Aug 9 21:50:35 daffy kernel: [ 305.985463] rtc: lost 3 interrupts
Aug 9 21:50:35 daffy kernel: [ 305.997039] rtc: lost 1 interrupts
Aug 9 21:50:38 daffy kernel: [ 308.837576] rtc: lost 1 interrupts
Aug 9 21:50:38 daffy kernel: [ 308.841359] rtc: lost 1 interrupts
Aug 9 21:50:40 daffy kernel: [ 310.654670] printk: 2 messages suppressed.
Aug 9 21:50:40 daffy kernel: [ 310.654835] rtc: lost 2 interrupts

I did some research and the only potentially useful suggestion I found
was to disable HPET in the motherboard BIOS. But, my motherboard
(i.e., ASUS M3A) doesn't have an HPET setting that I could find. So,
that's out, I think.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.
