automatic mythfilldatabase not adding any new days

Each night mythfilldatabase runs automatically from the backend but it
doesn't add any new data at the end.

For example if there are 14 days data the next day it will only retrieve
13 days and then 12 days. However if I run mythfilldatabase manually (
but as the mythtv user) it works correctly bringing in 14 days.

The first few lines of the logfile are the same as the live output
(extract 1 below).

The log file seems to show the data ending at offset day 12 in a similar
way to the normal day 14.

I am using tv_grab_uk_rt, on Debian with backports, mysql is on the same
box as the backend.

Hopefully this is the correct place to ask such a question.

The behaviour you initially describe is frequently down to the Radio
Times not updating the listings files, but that should be the case
whether it is run automatically or manually. The
http://xmltv.radiotimes.com/xmltv/94.dat file currently has data until
10/08/2008, which is 13 full days.

Are any other uk_rt users seeing the same behaviour?

I can confirm similar behaviour, fails on automatic run but works fine run
manually. it's not really bugged me enough yet to look much deeper into it.
I'm running Arch Linux with xmltv 0.5.51.

What happens when you run

tv_grab_uk_rt --capabilities

from the command line?

I seem to frequently see this error when I check the status in MythTv
(through my frontend) - the old "mythfilldb ran, but didn't insert any
data..." error. In fact, when I checked last night it said that. However
checking this morning (via mythweb) it says everything is fine and there
is guide data for 13 days.

I've not tried running it manually when I've seen these errors and it has
always fixed itsself after a day or so. I just assumed it was RT not
updating the files.

Robert.

I am seeing the same behaviour and I am using SchedulesDirect in North
America. This has been affecting me for some time. I have just upgraded
from svn trunk 17225 to 17961 and have had the same results with both.

Previously I sometimes saw an error message at the end of the mfdb run
about threads not being closed.

Would everyone experiencing this bug please:

Open a terminal and run "ps -ae | grep mythfilldatabase".

This will tell us if mfdb is finishing and closing cleanly, or whether
it is leaving something behind.

I suspect that when it leaves a thread behind, any new call fails with
the 'failed to insert new data' message. (Symptom being 'days of
available listings' decreases by one.)

This will help pinpoint the bug, I think.

Geoff

It doesn't seem very likely that this issue is still around, since it
was fixed a year ago, but for me it produced the symptoms you're
seeing so I thought I'd mention it.

We may have 2 different problems, or not. I suspect that it is a problem
with mfdb. And it is still around.

I can run mythfilldatabase in a terminal, and it finishes properly. If
run by the internal 'cron' settings, it fails.

Unfortunately, there are no useful entries in the mfdb log.

I am presently set up to test using an external cron, to see if that
makes any difference, but it will take 24 or 48 hours to tell.

Looks like this is fixed for me, I symlinked tv_grab_uk_rt to /usr/bin/ and it
now runs automatically with no problem.

Apparently the automatic Mythfilldatabase is not working for me either
(Mythdora 5).

I just run it manually every couple days and put off figuring it out until
later.

I guess it's later now.

Yes this issue (or one very like it) is still around.

Unfortunately there is no way I can tell how old these old threads are.
And uptime is 45 days, so they could be quite old.

[root[at]myth ~]# ps -ae | grep mythfilldatabas

25800 ? 00:00:00 mythfilldatabas

Mine stopped running automatically years ago (possibly with the
upgrade to 0.21 svn) so I just have it in a cron job each night and
that works without any problems.

out of curiosity, where is tv_grab_uk_rt in your filesystem?

It is located in /usr/bin/perlbin/vendor/ along with several other grabbers
that I personally do not use. The directory is in all of my regular users'
path (including root), but that appears to be insufficient for this to work.

But I wonder if it is in the path when mythbackend runs
mythfilldatabase. I suspect not.

It would seem not. Do you know offhand where I need to look to change this?
This might be related but it is probably offtopic, I run mythbackend from
inittab but after upgrading from 0.20 to 0.21 (fixes) I had to create a
wrapper script to provide the $HOME path otherwise it would not start.

You could export the updated path for the mythbackend process in the
same script. If you are using Fedora, there is an updated initscript
that fixes the $HOME issue available in MythTV's contrib/ folder.

I'd post a ticket on whatever bug system mythtv devs run.

Re: automatic mythfilldatabase not adding any new days (fixed) [In reply to]

Mine gives a slightly different output

$ tv_grab_uk_rt --capabilities
baseline
manualconfig
cache
share

Anyway this morning I have 13 days of guide data which is the same as
yesterday, so maybe my problem was something odd on the Radio Times
website (perhaps less data at 02:00 than in the day time).

Using the current development vesion (0.5.52+), we now support

$ tv_grab_uk_rt --capabilities
baseline
manualconfig
cache
preferredmethod
tkconfig
apiconfig

The Radio Times data is updated early each morning at about 0600 - I
therefore update just before 0700.

"ps" has other flags which should show more columns. Try "ps auxw" or "ps
-ef" for example.

Re: automatic mythfilldatabase not adding any new days [In reply to]

Mine also seems to have given up running automagically;

"Last mythfilldatabase run started on 2008-08-07 02:04 and ended on
2008-08-07 02:07. FAILED: xmltv returned error code 2304.
There's guide data until 2008-08-20 01:30 (13 days). "

Running it in a terminal is fine.

Is this a problem with older mythfilldb's?

I don't know about 'old'. I have seen this with various versions of svn
trunk from the mid 16000's through 17225. I'm now on 17961 on fedora 8.
It is quite possible that it is present in .21.

I first noticed this about when svn switched to qt4. I do not remem ber
this happening before that, but then again, I may be having a senior
moment/minute/day/epoch/eon....

I *think* what happens is the mfdb does not completely clean up all its
threads. Future runs then fail.

I believe this because every time, recently, when I see the problem, I
find at least one instance of mfdb when I run 'ps -ae | grep myth' in a
terminal. And mfdb is NOT running or supposed to be running when I do
that. A quick 'killall mythfilldatabas' (yes, that last is not a typo),
clears things, and mfdb then runs automagically for some weeks.

And then it stops working...again. I have no idea why and the logs show
nothing. I only know the symptom not the cause of the disease. And I
really do not know how to further track down what is actually happening.
