Pinnacle PCTV HD Card

Hi Folks,

I've just bought a Pinnacle PCTV HD Card as per
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8512424&type=product&id=1186005934822 and I'm trying to configure it to worth with my hardy Mythbuntu install.

I've been following the instructions on
http://mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Pinnacle_PCTV_HD_Card_(800i) and have
extracted the firmware, and compiled the v4l-dvb drivers per that page.
I'm then able to see the device as an option in mythtvsetup. I've
configured it as an MPEG-2 encoder card, and in the "Probed Info"
section it's showing "Pinnacle PCTV HD800i [cx8800]". I've then setup
Schedules Direct as a Video Source, and under "Input Connections" I've
defined "[MPEG: /dev/video0] (Television) -> Schedules Direct". I've
then performed the "Scan for Channels" and have got a bunch of channels
showing up (I'm just using rabbit ears, don't have cable or satellite),
but when I go to "Watch TV" on the mythfrontend I get a blank screen for
a few seconds and then I'm returned to the main menu. I see the
following in the frontend log:

2008-06-07 09:28:57.828 TV: Attempting to change from None to
WatchingLiveTV
2008-06-07 09:28:57.829 Using protocol version 40
2008-06-07 09:29:03.102 GetEntryAt(-1) failed.
2008-06-07 09:29:03.103 EntryToProgram(0 [at] We Dec 31 16:00:00 1969)
failed to get pginfo
2008-06-07 09:29:03.103 TV Error: LiveTV not successfully started
2008-06-07 09:29:03.138 TV Error: LiveTV not successfully started
2008-06-07 09:29:03.234 TV: Deleting TV Chain in destructor
2008-06-07 09:29:03.238 DPMS Deactivated
2008-06-07 09:29:03.238 DPMS Reactivated.

Also, after a recent update to linux-restricted-modules, whenever I run
the mythtv-setup script and try to go to any of the pages (General,
Capture Cards, Video Source, etc.) I get a message saying "If this is
the master backend server, please run mythfilldatabase to populate the
database with channel information". The only option is "OK" at which
point mythtv-setup exits and I'm asked to run that mythfilldatabase. If
I do, it runs fine, but still I get the same message when I re-run
mythtv-setup. So now I can't see my current config, or change it in any
way...

Any help appreciated.

Thanks, Tom

You will get the mythfilldata base question every time you exit
mythsetup...Just ignore it,unless it's the first time you have run
mythsetup...More than likely the black screen problem you are getting is
a permission problem...Make sure the folder where your video captures
are stored have the right user permission's set...My user is mythtv so
my video file folder is owned by mythtv....

Hi Tom,

Not sure this is relevant but when I got that UDB stick working with
Mythbuntu 8.04 I was helped by James on this group. Our thread is
here: http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/335847

I didn't have any problems as it worked as soon as I tried it so I don't
know if what you are seeing is due to doing something different from
what is in this post. Also, this may be old and it only works with the
first release of 8.04, not the upgraded version. I quit using the USB
stick and am now fighting a host of problems with my new computer.

Best of luck,

Allen

Making some progress, I think.

I've also checked the permissions of the folders where my video captures
are stored, and it seems the permissions did need fixing. I did that,
but I still get the message prompting me to run mythfilldatabase from
any of the mythtv-setup screens. I tried watching TV again, and this
time I got the following:

Mine is the PCI version. In any case, I'll see if I can glean anything
from this thread that might help me. Thanks for the pointer!

Re: Pinnacle PCTV HD Card [In reply to]

It's probably not the same problem but I recently installed this card and was having a problem with the v4l-dvb drivers. There are several branches where you can download a kernel module source and compile but I just ended up upgrading my entire kernel to the latest stable version and the included 4dl-dvb drivers then worked fine.

Subject: [mythtv-users] Pinnacle PCTV HD Card

Thanks, Tom

I think you might be onto the right track here. I recompiled the v4l-dvb
modules and now I'm able to run:

scan
/usr/share/doc/dvb-utils/examples/scan/atsc/us-ATSC-center-frequencies-8VSB > channels.conf

Previously I was getting errors telling me the
device /dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0 didn't exist, so I think I was
looking at a kernel/kernel module issue.

However, I get the following when I run the scan command:

mthaddon [at] sentine:~$

All the channels seem to fail this way, and I'm left with an empty

Re: Pinnacle PCTV HD Card [In reply to]

Which driver in the package did you load?

Also, which branch did you download for the drivers and what is your kernel version?

My kernel is a stock mythbuntu 2.6.24-19-generic, and I downloaded the
drivers from here:

http://linuxtv.org/hg/v4l-dvb

I think I downloaded the bzip version, which has unpacked into a
directory v4l-dvb-afa24b594522. I have the firmware file
dvb-fe-xc5000-1.1.fw, although I've just realized it's not in the
appropriate directory (it's in /lib/firmware/2.6.24-18-generic/ not 19)
I'll put it in there and recompile the drivers.

Thanks, Tom

Ok, making some progress.

"scan /usr/share/doc/dvb-utils/examples/scan/atsc/us-ATSC-center-frequencies-8VSB" gives me:

I tried running "Watch TV" from within MythTV but it failed on me again.
Time to head to bed now, but will give it a try tomorrow from within
mplayer per the instructions on an earlier thread to verify I have the
card working.

I use that card quite successfully, BUT only with the addition of the patch
from the linux-dvb list that I will drop in below. This patch to the xc5000
tuner module (that this pinnacle card uses) has been available since late
January of this year. Word was that it would be included in the mainline
linux-dvb "probably in the next few weeks" but that has not happened. I'm
not sure why not.

Here is the patch that resolved the issues you seem to be having from me.
Thanks again to Mr Zhang.

P.s. here is a link to the archive of the patch
http://www.linuxtv.org/pipermail/linux-dvb/2008-January/023392.html

I just noticed that the previous patch that fixed the kernel oops has been
merged into the master tree, which conflicts with the patch for tuner
performance improvement(which contains the oops fixes too). I regenerated
the patch against the master tree and it is below. Please use this one
instead.

Re: Pinnacle PCTV HD Card [In reply to]

I believe that you now need to take those results, and go to mythtv-
setup, scan your channels there, make sure the numbers jive (I did
this back in march, but can't remember how. ) and match them up with
the schedulesdirect channels you have listings for.

I'm able to watch TV with mplayer having done the scan into a
~/.mplayer/channels.conf file and then running "mplayer dvb://", so it
looks like the card's working for me. Having said that, I'm still having
problems watching TV from within MythTV and can't check my
configuration/change my channel settings in "mythtv-setup" because
before I can get to any screen it tells me to "run mythfilldatabase",
gives me only the "OK" option and then exits out. So I think my problems
now are all about the way MythTV is setup rather than getting the card
working.

Thanks, Tom

Ok, so I am able to watch TV in mplayer if I use the channels.conf I've
created and run "mplayer dvb://", however, I still can't watch TV in
MythTV. I get the following when I try in the backend log:

And when I try to go into mythtv-setup, I doesn't let me get very far.
Thought this screencast might help show what I mean:

I have no idea why it's trying to record or delete the files/shows it

That patch as far as I know has not been merged into the linux-dvb
tree. However, I have heard that the current xc5000 tuner driver as it
is now is fairly stable already (without my patch mentioned in that
post), although I did not test that myself (i.e., I am using the old
tree back from January with my own patch and it works fine, so "don't
fix it if it ain't broken".).

So if you have the a current kernel, it should work fine. The problem
Tom was having is most likely a mythtv configuration issue instead of
a driver problem. With that said, if you are welcome to try my patch
mentioned, with one warning: it will not cleanly apply to the current
linux-dvb source tree because the xc5000 tuner driver code has changed
a lot since I generated the patch back in January.

To work around that, there are two options, (1) download the older
version of the source code of linux-dvb and apply the patch as is,
which I personally don't recommend; (2) use the most current linux-dvb
code, but that means a new patch needs to be generated. I haven't
touch the linux-dvb code for a while due to other commitments. So
unless absolutely necessary, I probably won't find the time to
regenerate the patch against the newest linux-dvb source tree.

Best,

Sorry to chime in so late, but while I was looking for a solution to a
different problem I believe I see where your error is.

Here you have set the card to use the analog tuner and not the ATSC
tuner for the HD. This needs to be set up as a dvb tuner
(/dev/dvb/adapter#).

Looks like the card is working here, but notice that your using dvb
which access /dev/dvb/adapter0 where as the ivtv driver is looking at
/dev/video0. I hope this isn't to late.
