closed caption missing letters

Hello! I am having problem with my mythtv and pvr mce 250 card closed caption. I'm missing letters in the caption often. And I tested it with cable and broadcast and even digital tv. All turned out same result.

Digital tv has closed caption bulit in and their closed caption is perfectly unlike closed caption from mythtv. So I know it is not broadcast issues.

so is there any way I could solve the problem? Or even narrow down to source of problem?

since I am deaf so it is very important for me get closed caption to show properly.

Thanks in advance!

Your PVR 250 isn't capturing digital TV; it always captures analog
signals. They might have been digital up to a cable box.

A number of options occur to me:

- Check signal strength and quality just before your PVR250
- The IVTV driver might have problems; what revision are you
using?
- Could you get an ATSC tuner and see if that gets the channels
you need with adequate quality? ATSC captions seem to be much
more reliable than NTSC. (This only applies if you are in the
US).

Re: closed caption missing letters [In reply to]

yeah sorry i wasn't clear on DTV thing... i meant by digital tv. i
meant those 40 coupon digital converter (INSIGNIA) stb (which i
haven't succesfully make it work with ir blaster which is for another
time). so it actually converts digital to analog so then my 250 pvr
would be able to capture it.

for DTV the signal is very strong as that i live in the city so
singals are no problem at all.

i am using mythdora 5, i tried ti find out more info about ivtv which
version i was using but wasn't able to. (i am currently at work so
can't check it til i get home)

well i COULD try get astc tuner but since i already have DTV i might
as well as just use DTV converter and 250 MCE instead since as that i
can't afford another tuner card at the moment.

Re: closed caption missing letters [In reply to]

Unfortunately, it may be a problem with the IVTV drivers and the 250. I
had to switch to a 150 to solve the problem. I had a thread about this here:
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/311619#311619

There's still discussion about the problem over on the IVTV lists. They
are aware of the problem but are having trouble getting time to fix it;
there's never enough hours in the day!

Dan,
Closed Captions are currently broken for PVR-250 & PVR-350 in IVTV
drivers over version 0.10.1 It works OK with a PVR-150 or PVR-500
Currently, version 1.2.0 is included with Kernel 2.6.25, so that was
quite an old version that worked.

This was the last update from Hans

To find your IVTV version, type dmesg |grep ivtv in a console window. To
find your kernel version, type uname -r

If I understand right, you have digital OTA stations, picked up by a US
government DTV recevier box and fed into your PVR-250 via an s-video cable.
An ATSC capture card, like a PcHDtv or an HD Homerun, would pickup the
digital OTA (with captions) and capture it directly, bypassing the DTV
converter box.

I'm in Canada and I wish I had some ATSC coverage, I'm using satellite
tv right now, so I'm waiting for mythtv support of the HDPVR-1212 (and a
faster frontend to play the h.264 streams)

Re: closed caption missing letters [In reply to]

thanks everyone! that really explained my question. i suppose i
probably should consider ASTC card then since i had so much trouble
using digital convertor box as STB with remote ir blaster (it failed
miserable, but wasn't even good idea in the first place since the tv
broadcast has been converted twice digital > analog > digital. i
suppose 250 is good for stb with digital cable with cc built in. i
guess i can hold 250 til someone fixes the problem. but thanks! it
sure gave me peace of mind!

Re: closed caption missing letters [In reply to]

i got the version of ivtv, and looks like you guys was on the spot about ivtv.

"MythDora5 uses the ivtv-1.0.3-136 version from ATrpms."

I was wondering if it was possible to uninstall the current ivtv and install last version where closed caption was last working perfectly. or is it impossible?
