Sound card

I'm looking into getting the HD PVR (assuming it will work with
mythtv) and was wondering what would be a good sound card to use with
it. My myth box currently has 2 channel sound on the motherboard. What
would be a good card to get to add 7.1 surround sound?

Your 2-channel will work just fine if running to a TV with only 2 speakers.
If you are running to a A/V receiver with 5.1 speakers you most likely have
a digital out header on your motherboard. You can use this along with a
SPDIF bracket to run to your receiver to get your Dobly Digital.

I think he is talking about *input* ie capture, not output. A digital "out"
header on the motherboard ain't going to help.

Why would he be worried about input? The HD-PVR has a digital audio
input on it.

I was talking about output. I plan on hooking my frontend up to a
surround sound receiver, and I didn't know if there was a certain card
that worked well with myth and linux.

FWIW, the Turtle Beach Riviera "Just Works" and has a built-in optical output.

I would give your internal header a shot first. you can build a Copper
header with about $3 in parts. Thats what I did and i have 3 different
motherboards thru the years and the on-board has usually worked by just
putting ALSA:spdif in Myth and un-muting the out in alsamixer.

but check your motherboard for a SPDIF header pin (will be a 2 pin or
3 pin plug and should have "SPDIF" printed next to it, or check the
manual if you have it) first, if its got one already no reason to
waste a PCI slot/extra power/etc.

Any more info on this? Links to building such a header? I have a
motherboard with built-in 7.1 sound, but no SPDIF-out. Is
building/installing this header pin as easy as it sounds? Any soldering
on the motherboard?

Thanks.

Your not building the header pins. You are building/buying a interface that
connects to the SPDIF header on the motherboard and gives you a RCA plug for
a COAX connection to the receiver or a SPDIF plug.

I will second that.

your board would have to have the header pins already on, then it
would just be a matter of buying a bracket (usually like $10-15) and
connecting the wire to the header pin.
