MythTV 0.21 on Xebian installed (was Compiling MythTV on a computer instead of the Xbox)

Morning!

Just thought i would let anyone know who was following this thread, i
successfully installed MythTV 0.21 via apt-get. Here is a list of my
sources.list file:

# MythTV
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ etch main

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ etch main non-free contrib
deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ etch main non-free contrib
deb http://yoeu.net/debian sarge main
deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib non-free

i had to install some libqt3 packages, but it went smoothly. Now, time to
figure out plugins!
Whoever created the debian packages, thanks! (if your on this list hehe)

Cheers!

Here's the package info from the repo:

Installed no problem. It looks like I'm actually getting a performance boost
with the new version. I also had done a full dist-upgrade and switched from
xfree86 to xorg, and am using new xbox nvidia xorg drivers. So I'm not sure
what's to account for the performance gains.

On an unrelated note, does anyone know if it's possible to block HD channels
from a single frontend? Or limiting the frontend to a single (SD) tuner?

But it would also work if you have a fully dedicated linux-xbox right?
And so if I just update my sources file as per the previous post and
do a dist upgrade, would that be enough?

Cheers,

I attempted this on my XBox running MythTV-0.20.2 on Xebian 1.1.4 and
unfortunately, it did not work. I ran into problems when installing
"x11-common"...

Could you post provide step-by-step details, or be willing to send me
a copy of your image?

Thanks

All that I needed to do was set my apt.sources list to the one in this
thread, do an 'apt-get update' and then 'apt-get install mythtv-frontend'

But I had already installed a number of dependencies when I was trying to
compile mythtv 0.21 myself (and failed). The only way to solve any
dependency issues is to systematically work your way backwards. If
installing mythtv-frontend fails on 'x11-common', try installing x11-common
by itself. If that fails, you should be able to see what is missing, and
install that. I had to repeat that process about 100 times when I was trying
to compile 0.21 a couple weeks ago. Shouldn't be anywhere near that
cumbersome for installing a precompiled package.

Well i used info from
http://www.knizefamily.net/russ/software/xbox.html(minus the kernel
upgrade cuz you cant do that on a E image) so i could do
the upgrade to etch and then, as Skitals was saying, while trying to compile
it myself i installed more dependencies that were listed at
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Xbox_Frontend_Compile_with_SVN:

apt-get install libdbd-mysql-perl libdbi-perl libmysqlclient12
libnet-daemon-perl libplrpc-perl mysql-client mysql-common pwgen
ttf-freefont
apt-get install qt3-dev-tools liblame-dev liblame0 liblircclient-dev
alsa-oss libqt3-mt-dev libqt3-mt-dev gcc g++ libqt3-mt-mysql
libqt3-i18n
apt-get install subversion
apt-get install distcc
apt-get install libqt3-compat-headers
apt-get install xmltv

i had to change some program names, cant remember which, but im sure u can
figure it out!
Hope this helps!

Cheers!

Here's the message displayed when I attempt to install x11-common; it
has occurred several times, even when I was following Ryan's advice to
upgrade to etch.

Cannot remove /usr/X11R6/bin directory

This upgrade requires that the /usr/X11R6/bin directory be removed and
replaced with a symlink. An
attempt was made to do so, but it failed, most likely because the
directory is not yet empty. You
must move the files that are currently in the directory out of the way
so that the installation
can complete. If you like, you may move them back after the symlink is
in place.

This package installation will now fail and exit so that you can do
this. Please re-run your
upgrade procedure after you have cleaned out the directory.

Any ideas?

Did you try removing the files from the directory and re-running as
per the instructions?

Actually, I renamed it to bin.old/ and created an empty bin/
directory, but it gave the same error. However, I seem to be past the
problem now, as a quick Google search for the error message gave me
this URL:

http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.ports.xbox.user/8307

... and basically, it says to remove xtdesktop, using the command:

dpkg -r xtdesktop

I'm trying it now.

Cool. Let us know how it goes. I won't be doing the 0.21 upgrade for
a few weeks since I am leaving for holidays soon and don't need
frantic phone calls from the family because they can't watch their
shows. I am keen to get it done though and I am very glad there are
official debian packages that seem to suit the Xbox.

Cheers,
Whytey

Re: MythTV 0.21 on Xebian installed (was Compiling MythTV on a computer instead of the Xbox) [In reply to]

Well, looks like I'm dead in the water.

Background -

My master backend is running Fedora 8, and I've upgraded it to
MythTV-0.21 using Axel's RPM/smart. It seems to be using 0.21-fixes
branch.

% mythbackend --version
Please include all output in bug reports.
MythTV Version : Unknown
MythTV Branch : branches/release-0-21-fixes
Library API : 0.21.20080304-1
Network Protocol : 40
Options compiled in:

using_xvmc_vld using_glx_proc_addr_arb using_bindings_perl
using_bindings_python using_opengl using_ffmpeg_threads
using_libavc_5_3 using_live

My XBox/Xebian etch frontend is upgraded and running a MythTV-0.21 frontend:

xbox:~# mythfrontend --version
Please include all output in bug reports.
MythTV Version : Unknown
MythTV Branch : tags/release-0-21
Library API : 0.21.20080304-1

using_xrandr using_xv using_xvmc using_xvmcw using_bindings_perl
using_bindings_python using_opengl using_ffmpeg_threads
using_libavc_5_3 using_live

The problem is that when I run mythfrontend on the XBox, I get the
following output in the mythfrontend log file:

2008-03-25 14:14:31.177 This version of MythTV requires an updated
database schema. Please run mythtv-setup or mythbackend to update your
database.

It seems like whatever version of MythTV the Debian etch is compiled
against, it doesn't use the same mythconverg DB schema as what Axel
used.

My question - what distro are you running on your backends? Any Fedora 8?

Thanks!

Okay, out of desperation, I thought it might be a permissions problem,
so I issued a "GRANT ALL on mythconverg.* TO 'mythtv'@'%';" on my
backend's MySQL. Seems to have done the trick.

Although now I have the frontend running, but there is only the
background, and no menu items...

I'm getting a lot of these error messages:

2008-03-25 14:32:46.980 The theme (Iulius) is missing a themeinfo.xml file
2008-03-25 14:32:47.009 The theme (Iulius-OSD) is missing a themeinfo.xml file
2008-03-25 14:32:47.010 The theme (Minimalist-wide) is missing a
themeinfo.xml file
2008-03-25 14:32:47.062 The theme (MythCenter) is missing a themeinfo.xml file
2008-03-25 14:32:47.095 The theme (MythCenter-wide) is missing a
themeinfo.xml file
2008-03-25 14:32:47.126 The theme (MythTVMediaCenterOSD) is missing a
themeinfo.xml file

... so I've obviously got it running; but not 100% yet. Still have to
figure out what's going on with the themes.

Cool. What did you do to fix the theme problem?

Any chance you guys that have gone from 0.20.x to 0.21 on the Xbox
could write something up on the MythTV Wiki? I really am looking
forward to jumping on 0.21 as soon as I get the time to upgrade my BE
and 4 FEs.

I did three things:

1) I ran 'apt-get update mythtv-themes', and;
2) I stopped using some older, non-compatible themes (particularly
MythTVCenterOSD)
3) Went into MySQL manually (under the settings) table and deleted the
skin value for my xbox frontend.

As for writing it up into a wiki; it's possible, although I went
through so many trial and error steps to get it working... it might
not work 100%. I think following the sequence of messages in this
thread is the best way.

Okay, well, I will try and write up my attempt when I do get around to it.

Thanks for your replies,

Re: MythTV 0.21 on Xebian installed (was Compiling MythTV on a computer instead of the Xbox) [In reply to]

Sorry for what might be a stupid question, but is the upgrade of the
Xbox to Etch a prerequisite for the installation of MythTV 0.21? (I have
a softmodded Xbox that is running Xebian and MythTV 0.20). From the
information on www.knizefamily.net, the update to Debian Etch is a
fairly tortuous process and I don't want to make the change if it is not
needed.
Also, you commented "minus the kernel upgrade cuz you cant do that
on a E image"; I do not understand this as I thought the aim of the
whole process was to update the kernel. Neither Knize, nor the others
offering guides on Xebian upgrades
(http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Xebian-1.1.4-Kernel-2.6-Upgrade for
example) make this point. Can you explain?

Thanks in advance.

The upgrade to etch is not a prerequisite for the installation of
MythTV-0.21. However, a number of us have had a great deal of
difficulty compiling from source on sarge; due to various dependencies
which we have not been able to resolve. Additionally, someone else
'out there' running Debian etch (probably not on an XBox) has provided
the pre-compiled packages that only work under etch.

I am also not very familiar with the upgrade process to etch. But if
you update your sources.list file to point to etch, and do an apt-get
upgrade as per the website, it was quite easy and painfree. The only
caveat to watch out for is that Xebian-1.1.4 uses XFree86, and Etch
uses Xorg, so youhave to reconfigure your X server settings; which,
for me as just cutting a few lines from XF86config to xorg.conf.

The Linux 2.6 kernel does not read FATX partitions; which is what the
Microsoft uses for the XBox's filesystem. If you are running *only*
Linux/Xebian your XBox, then that is no problem. However, if you want
to keep other XBox software (like a dashboard, or XBMC, or play
regular XBox games) on your XBox, then you need to preserve the FATX
filesystem... thus limiting you to the older 2.4 kernel. That's the
main reason for sticking with the 2.4 kernel.

I personally just used the xbox nvidia xserver-xorg driver and matching
xorg.conf posted here: http://www.knizefamily.net/russ/software/xbox.html

I don't know if it's necesarry, but it made my switch from XFree86 to Xorg
painless.

Re: MythTV 0.21 on Xebian installed (was Compiling MythTV on a computer instead of the Xbox) [In reply to]

Kanetse & Skitals,
Thank you for your detailed replies; particularly the clarification
of the kernel upgrade. After my softmodded Xbox boots, I can access FATX
format E partition and what you are saying is that this can only happen
with kernel v2.4 as FATX support is not provided in kernel v2.6.
Now, if I do not need to use the data on the E partition from Linux,
can I use kernel v2.6, effectively ignoring the FATX partitions (and
wasting most of the Xbox disk space), or will using kernel that cannot
see the FATX partitions prevent my Xbox from working. I do not use the
Xbox for anything other than Linux, so maybe I should start from scratch
with the Xebian install and select the option that reformats the whole
disk; your views would be welcome.

Thanks.
