Help with volume control in mythtv

I moved my hardware over to a slightly newer box this weekend, and
everything is working fine, with the exception of volume control in
Mythtv. When playing back any sound, the volume buttons on the remote
control no longer affect the volume. In alsamixer, the only item that
will affect the volume is the 'Headphone' setting. But how do I get
the volume buttons on the remote control to map to Headphone instead
of PCM or Master? In Setup-->General-->Audio, I tried changing Mixer
Controls to Headphone, but no luck. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Plug your audio cable into the proper jack...

If colour coded, aim for the blue one :) It's usually line-out. And
yes, I've stuck a little label on mine marked "this one" because I get
it wrong.

Green is usually Line-out, with Blue as Line-in and Pink being Mic.

I wish it were that simple. There are 3 jacks in the back of the box:

Blue: Line-in from the PVR350
Green: Line out to the back of the TV
Red: Microphone (unused)

So I don't see where else I can plug in the jack that goes out to the
TV. If it's any help, here's the output the audio portion of lspci.
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801BA/BAM
AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 05)

if you are using /dev/dsp as your audio device, you can specify "Headphone"
in your "Mixer Controls" field by simply typing it in. In my experience can
be the string label that alsamixer uses.

So much for the universal colouring eh? On mine green is
amplified/headphones, blue line-out and pink/red mic/line-in (alegedly),
never tried it.

I second this one. I had to manually type in the name in the mixer
control area to get mine to work correctly.

I tried that previously, and tried it again tonight. I'm including a
link to a screenshot to make sure that we talking about the same
setting. Again, the 'Headphone' mixer device is the only one that
truly controls volume, but mythtv seems to only change the volume on
the PCM device, regardless of what is in Mixer Controls.

Thanks.

The only supported values in Myth (at least with OSS or ALSA) are Master
and PCM. The code checks to see if the value is Master, and, if not,
uses PCM. So, anything you type in is nothing more than a placebo.

To solve your problem, you have 3 options:
1) Since your sound card does not have a 'Master' control, you can
actually define a softvol control named 'Master' using the ALSA
configuration file (~/.asoundrc or /etc/asound.conf), then use this to
change the volume. Doing so has all the down sides of using a software
volume control.
2) You can disable "Use internal volume controls" and use an
external script to control volume.
3) You can get a different sound card.

(There is a 4--write a patch--but I'll leave it out of the list. If,
however, you want to do that, let me know as there are a few people you
should probably talk to first (some who have plans for where the MythTV
ALSA/OSS code will be going in the future).)

That's what I'm talking about. I'll see if I can take a screen shot
tonight of exactly what I have in mine. For some reason I thought I
put it in mixer device, but I can't remember.

I have ALSA:default as the audio output device, Mixer Device as
default, and Mixer Controls as Front.

I think using ALSA instead of dsp is the key to getting this to work.
