MythRecipe - Good progress

Hi,

This posting is an update on Mythrecipe status.

I have completed adding the following functionality via the mythweb interface. Some parts still have bugs, but my wife and I will make a test run by adding our own recipes and managing them. I will start on the Mythui interface after I have completed the myth web interface for the recipe program. I hope mythui will be in good shape in about 3 wks when I'm finished with the web interface.

1. Create new recipes by manual entry
2. Delete recipes
3. View recipes
4. Search recipes by:
- cuisine/category
- recipe name
- recipe ingredients
- prep, cooking, total time
- nutritional data
- date modified/date created
any of these criteria can be combined to make a complex search.
5. shopping list, adding and deleting
6. browsing recipes specifying by cuisine, number per page, alpha order

I'm working on:
1. Adding manual things to the shopping list
2. Adding the ability to import recipes from other sources.
3. Adding new cuisines/categories
4. Fix a number of bugs that I know about.

If anyone would like to try this out in a few weeks, please let me know. However, it will not have the mythui funtionality in the front end, that will not be completed until about 3-4 months from now. Other the web interface will be available.

Regards,
Kevin

I will upload a couple of screen shots in another post.

Looks good, I would be very interested in Beta testing it when it's ready.

I too would be interested in testing MythRecipe. My wife has been asking
about some kind of recipe/grocery shopping program for ages.

Mine hasn't been asking for it, but I'm sure I could get her to open the
purse for a new hard drive for the myth if she realized this thing could
keep a kitchen "inventory" for her.

It's a great idea and I'm interested. The problem I see is converting
all the paper menus to digital!

We have the same issue, lots of printed recipes.

So, I plan to scan them in and use OCR to translate the text. Just copy and paste the text into MythRecipe. Also, the recipe image, picture of the finished dish(if it exists), must be saved into a file. The image will be saved into the database.

Will there be any way to share these recipes? Maybe an online
repository you could submit them to? (I dunno where... maybe a gmail
account? it's got plenty of space!)

Random Recipe would be brilliant. You choose 'local random recipe' for
those days you just don't know what to cook for dinner or 'internet random
recipe' for those days you are feeling adventurous and want to branch out.

rec.food.recipes

moderated, recipes are reformatted by the mods if need be.

You could add functionality that would suck in recipes meeting some
specific conditions - words, etc.

Careful there tiger. A whole lot of those recipes you see will be copyrighted or
some such daft nonsense.

Hmmm. Might be a bit like dress patterns. i.e. you can make them up yourself,
make backup copies, can't make them for profit or pass them on. Your laws may
vary, as they say.

Re: MythRecipe - Good progress [In reply to]

You could also do this via either the search or the browse recipe web pages.

In the search, you could search, for example, chicken recipes with these ingredients that you have in stock. So, you could make it without heading to the store.

Borwse recipe will let you look at recipes via cuisine/categories. There are two levels of categories/cuisine supported right now.

For example:
All Recipes
Japanese
Sub-cat1
Sub-cat2
Chinese
sub-cat
.
.

Recipes can be located in any category.

I tried to upload some pics to this group, but there are not permitted because the size is too large.

Are you thinking of using something like DSpace? If a "sucker"
application were able to pull in all the existing recipes from places
like rec.food.recipes then someone could probably build an interface
to DSpace for uploading more recipes, and then have MythRecipe (the
"Client") pull from both the local database as well as the remote
DSpace repository. I'd be happy to host it, but I'm sure we could
find something more "official" to host it...

Well damn. I was thinking last night i wouldnt mind a recipe viewer, as i was going to set up a frontend in the kitchen as i spend a lot of time cooking. Guess i dont get to make it after all :P.

If your looking for testers give me a yell. I also have some limited programming experience in a few languages, mostly scripted, so Perl, PHP, python, a little ruby, etc.

Hi Adam,

I'll add you to the list of Beta testers. I was sick all last week, just now
feeling better. So, I was not able to release the web interface potion of
Myth recipe.

I'll try again for this week.

Having some PHP experience is good for the web interface, because much of
the web interface is built around it. Maybe too much. It's kinda hard to
view in programs that build web pages, like Macromedia Dreamweaver.

Kevin:

If you are adding people to the beta test list, please add me as well.
The addition of recipe software will raise the WAF sufficiently to
ensure that the computer "temporarily" in the kitchen remains there.
