NVidia 5200 independent output capability?

I'm preparing to build my first MythTV box, which will be used
primarily for HD programs. I'm looking to purchase an NVidia 5200
based video output card such as the Gigabyte GV-N52128DS (due to the
B/W OSD issue with xvmc - only 4000 and 5000 series NVidia cards
support the workaround).

I would like to connect the DVI output to my HDTV, and the D-sub
output to a computer monitor. The specifications of this card do not
clearly indicate if the two outputs are independent. If I use
Mythbuntu, will I be able to have separate, independent video outputs
for the desktop and the TV playback? I am concerned that the video
outputs provide a single signal in two formats (VGA and DVI).

Thanks!

You can use Twinview to setup the different outputs, but I have not
tried to see if you setup different X sessions on each output. But you
can run each output at a different resolution without any problems.

If you choose a relatively recent processor, you can go with a more
recent video card and avoid any XVMC issues which seem to plague this
list.
For an idea of what kind of processor you need to play back HD without
XVMC you can look at the chart on this page:
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/XvMC

Getting rid of XVMC was one of the best things I did to my myth box. :)

I was able to do this with my GeForce 5500.

Re: NVidia 5200 independent output capability? [In reply to]

I just had to swap 5200s just yesterday because one of them didn't support
DVI and VGA at the same time. It was listed as a FX5200LP on the board and
was a smaller, fanless version, so I think the DVI and VGA ports were
shared. Curiously this other 'fullsize' 5200 FX has to be forced into
acknowledging the existence of a device on the DVI connector (even if it was
the only display), and connecting two devices at once seems to mess up the
EDID info so I had to force that too. Twinview works nicely because you can
get full OpenGL on both displays and pretty good video output on both
(although I believe the second monitor has to use another overlay method).
I believe there are some other caveats if you decide to set things up with
seperate X screens spelled out in the nvidia driver readme.

can you tell use the mfr of the cards for both the swapped and swappee
cards? It'd be good to know.

I bought them both ages ago, so the only thing I can remember is that I bought
the one that doesn't work with dual monitors online and the other one in a
Microcenter store. I can tell now from looking at the bottom of the bad one
that the DVI and VGA ports are wired together, which is why only one device
works at a time. I almost think this was just done for space limitations
since the card is maybe 2/3s the size of the good one. Perhaps you can ask
on the nvidia linux forum if there's a way to identify these before purchase?

I have a dual monitor setup using twinview.

In the front end setup, you can specify which "xinerama" screen you want the
output displayed on. MythTV will then display in full screen on that
display only.
