OT: Cheap VIA PC

I just saw this and thought that the price tag of this whole PC is less than
the price of the motherboard and processor at some merchants:

http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/31/everexs-199-green-pc-attention-ignorant-wal-mart-shoppers/

The specs are not very clear to me but it might be interesting for someone
building a new frontend.

It's not bad for a pre-built system, although I picked up a dual core
Pentium D, board and case from Tiger Direct for $99...

What makes this one different is that it has a mini-ITX board and a VIA CPU
inside so it can be a fanless frontend easily.
I guess I should have made it clear in my initial post.

They have been having some pretty amazing deals over at tiger direct
lately. A couple of weeks ago they had a whole bare bones kit with a
nice amd proc, mother board, ram and case for $99. I should have
picked it up when I saw it.

I have the VIA chipset on my (el cheapo) back end, and have recurrent
issues w/ freeze ups and other instability. My HW guru friends tell me VIA
has known issues with DMA which is the root cause of this. Since I'm
evidently going to have to replace the MB/CPU when I get some scratch,
doesn't seem to me like I saved much money on that :-(

I agree completely. Via chipsets do not work well for mythtv
applications. Your best bet would be a nVidia based motherboard followed
by anybody else other than Via. I have had nothing but troubles from via
based boards. Would not give them away, straight into the trash. :)
