64-bit Ubuntu 7.10/Mythtv

All,

Is anyone having trouble with MythTV and Ubuntu 7.10 AMD64? I just
installed, and apparently, I am missing the video codec used by Myth. I'm
having a lot of trouble in general with video codecs on this version of
Ubuntu, and I was wondering if anyone else faced the same issues? I have
all of the gstreamer codecs/plugins, w64codecs and libdvdcss2 installed. I
checked the Medibuntu how to page, and I have all the appropriate
repositories enabled, and everything listed there installed. What am I
missing? I posted this on ubuntuforums.org, but all I can find there are
people with similar problems, but no solutions. I'm using the latest
version of Myth from the Ubuntu repositories (20.2 I believe).

I've looked at a lot of the posts about mythtv on the Ubuntu forums. I haven't
seen any posts about codec issues at all? All of the codecs used by myth are
shipped *with* myth. What are you having troubles playing?

Hi!

Well, I'm not Ubuntu pro, but I have been using it for about a year or
so now without a single (major) problem.

Are you using the svn version of Myth or the release. And, are you
compiling it on your own or using apt-get? One thing I'd recommend is
running

"apt-get build-dep mythtv"

and this will install all the dependencies for mythtv.

Hope that helps!!!!

Re: 64-bit Ubuntu 7.10/Mythtv [In reply to]

For some reason, I can play a DVD just fine using VLC, but I cannot do it
with MythDVD. I believe I can also play the DVD with mplayer (I am away
from my machine right now, or I would test that belief before stating it).
I have not changed any of the default MythDVD settings as far as player
options are concerned (I believe the player setting is set to "internal").
When I try to watch Live TV from my backend, I get clean audio with
pink/green squiggly horizontal lines (typically a video codec problem).
Livetv works fine on my Frontend/Backend machine (running Ubuntu
7.10i386). I had problems viewing .mp4 and .avi files (I'm not
exactly sure
what codec they are using, I'm not sure where the .avi's were created, but
the .mp4 files were created no the same machine when it was running Ubuntu
7.04 i386). I hope this stirs the pot enough to generate some more ideas;
it has me throughly confused.

Check your settings for MythDVD. Mine was pointing to the wrong device.

How's you X driver? How's your setting for live tv playback?

What TV card do yo have?

Are yo using the Mythbuntu stuff?

Are you using the old Ubuntu style of packages?

SVN ?

Beware of the build-dep statement made elsewhere in the thread if you
are using ubuntu packages, that will serve no purpose, just mainly
install -dev packages useless for the running of MythTV itself.

I'm running 7.10 64-bit backend+frontend with no such problem.

My system consists of: (I'm only listing what I believe to be relevant, let
me know if more detail could help)

Frontend:

CPU: PentiumD 830
Graphics: Geforce 7900GT
Display: Dell 1905PF

Backend/Frontend:

CPU: Pentium4 2.8ghz (400mhz bus)
Graphics: Geforce FX5200
Tuner0: PVR 250
Tuner1: PVR 500
Tuner2: PVR 500

>Check your settings for MythDVD. Mine was pointing to the wrong device.

I believe my MythDVD settings are ok, since it spins the correct drive, and
plays the correct audio, it's just the video that has problems (there would
have to be one hell of a coincidence for the correct audio to come from the
wrong drive)

Sorry, my job interrupted, and I trialled off on that point. I had problems
viewing most any kind of visual media file after I installed on my
backend/frontend, as well as my Frontend. On my backend/frontend, I was
able to install "w32codecs" which seems to have solved the problem. On my
Frontend, since it is running the AMD64 version, I had to install the
"w64codecs" package, and that seemed to allow me to play some files, but not
all.

>Are yo using the Mythbuntu stuff?

?Are you using the old Ubuntu style of packages?

I'm using the old style Ubuntu packages. I have used Mythbuntu a bit in the
past, but I haven't tried installing the Mythbuntu packages on top of an
existing Ubuntu install. Is anyone running the new Mythbuntu packages with
any success? I'm not apposed to the idea, but I always got my desired
result with the standard packages, so I tried to stick with what works.

Anyway, being that this is Ubuntu, and that my problem in general is
displaying video I figured there would be some simple how-to that would
explain how to "add x repository, sudo apt-get update, and then install x
package" as is the solution to just about every problem with an everyday
task like displaying video in Ubuntu. I am sitting several miles away from
my machines right now or I'd give more details.

Josh

. I get a similar problem when viewing TV (I get audio but not video). I'm
using a GeForce 7900GT video card on a PentiumD830 w/1gb ram. I have 2
tuner cards in my Backend/Frontend, a PVR 250 and a PVR 500. Both work fine
in my Backend/Frontend. However, my standalone Frontend is the one

Also, I believe my xorg.conf settings are ok because several 3D games work
at high resolutions, GLX gears gives me about 13,000fps, and I've never had
a problem making the nvidia-glx driver work with this machine since ubuntu
6.10 (other than to add 1280x1024 as a screen resolution choice).

This is weird, my system is AMD64, with an nVidia card (nvidia-glx),
using the ubutnu packages (plus the Mythbuntu layer, which should not
make any bit of difference in the end).

I am not experiencing anything close to your issues, at all.

I'm playing all kinds of media (mpeg1/2, divx, xvid, vorbis, theora,
including VC-1 1080p stuff (mplayer rc2, the only manual compile on the
box, with the v4l-dvb drivers), using avi, ogg, mkv, ts and mp4
containers and DVDs.

My repositories are all the usual Ubuntu stuff (main, restricted,
multiverse, universe, security backports), plus Medibuntu (free, non
free). That's all.

The system started its life as a daily CD Gutsy install somewhere in
june and was kept up-to-date throughout the dev cycle.

Your stuff is out of the ordinary, which may explain why there is no
how-to, there is normally no need for any.

I'm sorry that I cannot really offer any additional help, just the
assurance that there is a way to make it work, normally without any
weird thing needed to be done.

In my experience, media players such as mplayer, xine, and MythTV will
either refuse to play a file entirely or show no video in the case of a
missing or malfunctioning codec. I don't think "pink/green squiggly
horizontal lines" are typically a software codec problem.

However, I think you might have a video driver problem. I have Gutsy
(Ubuntu 7.10) running on two machines. My desktop machine has an Nvidia
7900GS based PCIe card an I'm using Nvidia's driver version 100.14.19
from Ubuntu's nvidia-glx-new package. I see green and pink squiggly
lines in a video window at seemingly random times. Whenever I do see
that, I can get the video to show up by switching to a different virtual
console and back without even restarting playback, so I'm guessing it's
a video memory management bug. I think I've only seen this behavior in
fairly recent versions of the Nvidia driver, but it didn't surprise me
much, since I'd seen many odd bugs in previous Nvidia drivers. Playing
video isn't as important on that system as my MythTV one, so I haven't
tried to figure out how to fix it.

I also just upgraded my MythTV system to Gutsy and had a couple of
entirely different video driver problems, though they're resolved now.
That machine has a Radeon 9600 and the Xorg driver.

So, you might want to try using a different driver or different version
and see if the problem persists.

You know what, I'm an idiot with a very short memory... I had the same
problem as your with my 7100GS.

I was running the nvidia-glx-new (100.14.19) restricted driver. Whenever
I started watching live TV, it was fine. When I switched to videos using
mplayer, weird color and lines. If I restarted, I could play the mplayer
stuff fine, but going to live TV gave me back the pink stuff.

I solved the issue by using nvidia-glx (9xxx series). Problem solved.

I should document this; at least on my web page.

Nico,

Thanks. I guess it seems like I solved this issue in the past by installing
new codecs, but perhaps in the same move I installed new versions of drivers
and failed to realize it. I'll give this a try when I get a chance. Thanks
for the tip.

I got the green-pink lines when I upgraded to the latest NVIDIA driver

I had this as well when I tried Mythbuntu Alpha 4 and apparently it's a bug
in the Nvidia 100.14.19 and they are working to fix it.

I'm not sure what actually solved the problem, but I reinstalled Ubuntu
using an actual release disc, rather than a pre-release, and it all seems to
work fine. I'm running the nvidia-glx-new driver, and I haven't had a
problem. I'm not sure what the difference between a fresh install of the
final release version vs an updated pre-release version of Ubuntu 7.10 amd64
would be. I did what I believe installed all the same packages, in terms of
myth software, drivers, and codecs, and I'm using the same hardware and
viewing the same media. Regardless, I'm happy that it works now. I figure
it's something to do with the ghosts in the machine.
