DVI vs HDMI

DVI vs HDMI

Greetings,

I'm currently feeding my monitor via DVI. The monitor can also do
HDMI. Well getting a DVI->HDMI cable improve the picture/performance of
the monitor?

The monitor is a Westinghouse 37"

What sort of picture/performance issues are you having? I have a dual-
link DVI cable to my Westinghouse 42" display. I've tried it in the
1080p DVI port, the 1080i DVI port and I've tried HDMI vs. component
video. They all look pretty much the same to me except I was getting
weird artifacts at 1080i that disappeared with 1080p, so I left it
there.

The short answer is that a good quality DVI cable should look
identical to a good quality HDMI cable.

Thanks!

The iissue I'm having is probably more related to the recordings from
one particular source - pvr150 via svideo. I'm just trying to elimate
all other factors.

So far, it sounds like the issue is somewhere else.

If you are driving with DVI-D, then there is no difference whatsoever.
It is exactly the same signals that are being carried.

If it is the analog pins of DVI that are being used, then you might
expect some improvement when switching to HDMI, however you can't get a
cable to convert from DVI-A to HDMI, because the signals are a different
format.

While this is true, it does not necessarily mean that the picture will
look identical. Some TVs treat DVI and HDMI inputs differently, e.g. in
terms of overscan amount, processing, color space, 1:1 pixel mapping etc.

Usually, if both kind of inputs are available, DVI is better suited for
connecting a PC (or at least not worse).
