Comcast Firewire in Montgomery County, MD

I'm interested in switching from Directv to Comcast Cable. I want to
use firewire capture from the STB to record HD channels.

I already have an HD HomeRun that I use to record unencrypted HD
channels, which is pretty much just the main broadcast networks. It
works great, but I'd love to expand my HD channel options.

So for those of you that live in Montgomery County, MD and use
firewire capture, what channels are you able to record? I'm not as
interested in recording the premiums as I am the basic channels (like
ESPN-HD, TNT-HD, etc.). Any particular model number I should try to
get?

Thanks.

Hey, I was just about to ask the exact same thing, except for Comcast in the
Kansas City area. Anyone?

Dave,

I am in Overland Park and I get all the locals plus TNT-HD, ESPN-HD, and
Discovery HD. For some odd reason you cant get ESPN2, A&E, or Mojo but then
again how much great content is on ESPN2, A&E, and Mojo. TWC gave me a
4250HDC. Channel changing through the firewire port does not work but
recording does. I built an IR blaster for channel changing.

Well, you can look in mythtv-setup and see the model numbers for STBs
that have built in support. Mine is a SA3250HD. But I'd say the main
thing is just to make sure it has firewire. The first STB Charter Cable
gave me did not have this. I had to take it back to them and get a
replacement. Legally they are supposed to have the firewire.

Re: Comcast Firewire in Montgomery County, MD [In reply to]

Chris:

I've only been able to get up to channel 99 through firewire (the
analog channels). The 100+ channels (the digital tier) doesn't seem
to come in. Montgomery County Comcast says that I should be able to
get more, but it hasn't worked for me yet (they claim to send some
command that opens up the channels, but I haven't seen a change). The
5C (or is it C5) encryption is off for the non-premium channels above
99, but I can't seem to get Myth to tune them in.

I haven't played with this for a while, but I'd like to get back to
it. If you have any suggestions or want to compare notes, I'd be
happy to share what little experience I've had with this.

One other thing to note -- the DST6200 box is not grounded. I found
out the hard way that it will ground itself through the firewire cable
if necessary -- frying a motherboard. I've since grounded the cable
box myself.

Sounds like maybe the cable drop to your house is improperly
grounded. This is, unfortunately, very common.

No, it was my 2 year old scuffling around on a carpet and then poking
around in the wiring closet who was not properly grounded.

Heh heh. You can make something idiot-proof, but you can't make it 2-
year-old proof. ;)
