UK Petition regarding BBC and Windows

I hope the list will tolerate this slightly off topic and UK specific request.

The BBC plan on implementing an on demand internet service which will be free. Unfortunately they have chosen a closed source implementation that will exclude Macs, Linux, BSD etc...anything other than Windows.
If you are resident in the UK and believe that the BBC should not just serve a particular part of a community but the whole of the community, (which is stated in their charter... and the reason you pay the £114.00 TV licence!) then please sign up.

The Petition ends on August 20 2007

To Sign the Petition go here

Re: UK Petition regarding BBC and Windows [In reply to]

I'm sure some people will think of this subject as one worthy of
comment or protest - but an online petition to force the government's
hand? Oh please!

Yet another shining example of why the e-petitions site is a waste of
taxpayers' money.

"Hey, I hear you need a computer to use the BBC's iPlayer software.
Not being the owner of a computer I think it's a gratuitous waste of
licence fee money. Withdraw the service now!"

No, don't withdraw it, just make it available to as many people as
possible.
In order to get that message across it needs as many people as possible
to say "I want it opened up!"

Or you could wait for the BBC to do what they and the BBC Trust have
already said they're going to do - provide a platform-neutral iPlayer.

No news here, move on......

If I were a British citizen, I don't think I'd be holding my breath waiting
for a linux player that supports DRM. I would however be questioning why a
public service broadcaster supported by tax dollars is so intent on
protecting content with DRM.

Because it's not their content they're protecting - it belongs to a
myriad of rights holders. A very low percentage of the BBC's output is
theirs to sub-license without restriction.

Like most broadcasters, they don't hold unlimited rights to all the
content they broadcast. My guess is copyright holders are forcing
their hand on this one.

Tax dollars? How did that happen? Did we suddenly become the 51st state or
something? Oh wait...

As you work for a research organisation and are asking people to sign
up to a petition, I would hope your facts would have been checked
before posting. A colour TV license currently costs £135.50.
Apparently it's no longer 2003.
