removing commercials

I have 2 broadcasts to burn, consecutively, to a DVD. Both had the
commercials marked, as I have done many times before and 'Use Cut List'
was checked. The first video was fine but the second one still had the
commercials. Any suggestions please as to the reason and how to avoid
this happening again?

Did you make a cut list? The default commercial flagging makes a skip list
that needs to be transfered to a cut list for the commercials to be cut. I
do this in the frontend with the E command while watching the video. I
believe when in the edit mode Home copys the skip list to the cut list.

Are you setting the 'Use Cut List' check box for each recording?

The cut list is applied per recording so you have to make sure that you
set 'Use Cut List' for each recording. You do that by selecting each
recording in the list on the 'Select Archive Items' screen and making
sure the 'Use Cut List' check box is checked. If the 'Use Cut List'
check box doesn't show for a recording then there is no cut list
available for that file and you will have to go back and edit the
recording to add the cut list.

You can check that you have set 'Use Cut List' for all the recordings
you have added to a DVD by looking on the last page of the wizard where
the 'Finish' button is located. The list of items to be recorded at the
top of that screen should have the check box checked below the pair of
scissors icon for all the items you want to remove commercials.

I'm pretty sure 'Z' is what loads the commflags when in edit mode. I could
be wrong though.

Thank you, that's it. I did not realise that you had to check the use
cut list box for each recording. I thought that checking the box would
apply to all the recordings in the list. Now I know.

I wondered what that box was for now I know, thank you very much. Excuse
my ignorance but where do I find all the items for each screen explained
so that I can avoid doing silly things?

I believe Z does this as well. Now I think the key is also page up.

I know that that the following keys (insert, delete, home, end, page up and
page down) all do specific editing tasks as I use them a lot. It is
frustrating though when I accidentally hit the key that causes a reload of
the seek list as I loose all my changes...

The problem is no developer likes writing documentation least of all me
:-) so there isn't really anything other than the wiki page at
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/MythArchive.

I think Myth would benefit from a context sensitive help system that
would allow you to press a key on each screen in Myth to get a popup
help screen detailing what each screen does. I wouldn't mind writing
something that does that but the problem is getting someone to write and
maintain the help documentation.

Thanks, and I think I understand the dilemma. So, until some sort of
miracle occurs, I will continue ask questions here.

That is a very good idea. However, it presupposes that there are those
who can not only write useful help data but also know what each screen
does.

Hi
I am not sure if this should be a new thread, but I upgraded MythtTV and
now the editing bar that usually appeared when I press E , does not appear.
Likewise, when I press arrow up and down to increse/decrease the jump
interval, the jump interval changes, but I do not see the letters
specifiying the jump intervals

removing commercials [In reply to]

I think I understand how to remove commercials and always use key frame
for cut points. In all cases removal is 100% with the exception of the
first commercial at the very start of the recording. When the cut
recording is replayed there is aways a very short flash of part of the
first commercial. Could this be because where the cut starts may not
coincide with a key frame? Is there any way of removing this very minor
irritant?

IIRC (and I don't feel like researching it), mythtranscode used to leave
the first frame of the recording regardless of cutpoint placement, but
the issue has been fixed (at least in SVN trunk), now. I'll leave
researching it up to you (and please feel free to let the list know how
far off I am).

Yeah, I found some settings in Mythtv-Setup to allow commercial flagging
(which I had selected) and checkboxes to allow each of the 4 user jobs
(which I didn't have selected). I turned on the User Job #1 box and
went into my recording, clicked the right arrow and told it to run the
job. It seemed to run for about 2 hours, and when I watched it, the
commercials were still in there. I had to FF thru them all. During
that 2 hour period, Mythweb said that the job was finished, but it never
actually removed anything.

So, I'm still in the same boat. :-)

The script on the wiki uses the -i option to mythtranscode like this:
mythtranscode --honorcutlist --showprogress -i $VIDEODIR/$FILENAME -o
$VIDEODIR/$FILENAME.tmp

That doesn't work. Try using this instead:

mythtranscode --honorcutlist -c $CHANID -s $STARTTIME --showprogress
-o $VIDEODIR/$FILENAME.tmp

Apparently --honorcutlist doesn't work with -i.
You will need to pass chanid and starttime into the script.

CHANID=$3
STARTTIME=$4

And call it:

/usr/local/bin/RemoveCommercials %DIR% %FILE% %CHANID% %STARTTIME%

Hope that helps. Works for me now.

OK, I made that change to the script, and setup another recording last
night. I setup the recording job via Mythweb and told it to flag
commercials, and to run the Remove Commercials user job (formerly User
Job #1). I just checked the recording and the commercials are still in
there, so obviously, that didn't work either. Would there be any
information in the logs somewhere that I could look at?

Thanks,
Harry

The removecommercials script flags the commercials so you don't need
to run a separate job for that. Not sure if mythcommflag returns an
error if trying to reflag but if so that might explain why the script
exited early.

In any case you can check the Information Center/System Info/Log
Entries in the front end to see if your job ran and if it succeeded.
You can also check your mythbackend log. That is where you will find
the messages related to your job. You should see something like this:

I checked my mythbackend.log, and got the following:
"sh: /usr/local/bin/removecommercials: /bin/sh^M: bad
interpreter: No such file or directory"

The file is there, and I double checked with Mythweb and it doesn't
appear to be a typo or anything like that. I checked via SSH and the
file is there and the permissions are 755, so I don't think that's it..
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Harry

Have you opened removecommercials in vim yet? Make sure the first line
doesn't have a ^M tacked onto it from uploading from windows machines.

Should look like this:
#!/bin/sh

And nothing more.

I just checked that and it looks just like you said. I didn't see any
^M in there anywhere. I can send it along if you want to look at it.

Open in vim again and do this to make sure it is in the right format:

:set ff=unix
:wq

You can actually run this script outside of myth until you get it
working. Just pass the parameters on the command line.

If you want to email it to me I can compare it to mine.

does /bin/sh exist ?

You should have:
~$ ls -la /bin/sh
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2007-10-21 13:19 /bin/sh -> bash*

Run this:

od -x /usr/local/bin/removecommercials | grep 0d

If this finds any "0d" (carriage return characters), you edited this file
with a DOS/Windows text editor. Run your favorite dos2unix tool on it, or
if you don't have one, this'll do:

tr -d "\015" < /usr/local/bin/removecommercials > /tmp/junk
mv /tmp/junk /usr/local/bin/removecommercials
chmod a+x /usr/local/bin/removecommercials

I just tried this and it appears to have worked. I had copied the
original over to a temporary name. I did the tr command as you
suggested, then I ran the removecommercials script to test it. I got
the usage printout, so that's a good sign. Running the renamed,
original version gave me the original problem, so the file being in DOS
format seems to be what the trouble was.

Thanks to all of you who helped out on this.
Harry

Perhaps it's because dash is being used instead of bash? My ubuntu was
like that..

The wiki merely mentions mythtv flagging commercials in the first
sentence, and then proceeds as though they have been flagged to talk
about removal. Thing is, I'm not sure myth necessarily flags the
commercials by default. Have you ensured that commercial flagging is
configured on your recording profile?

Cheers.

Re: Removing Commercials [In reply to]

They're definitely flagged - if I watch them from the front end the
commercials get skipped.
