zap2it quitting on mythtv!?!?!?!

From Zap2it...
http://labs.zap2it.com/ztvws/ztvws_login/1,1059,TMS01-1,00.html

For several years we have offered a free TV listings service to
hobbyists for their own personal, noncommercial use. In October of 2004
we posted here an open letter saying the future of Zap2it Labs was at
risk because of certain growing misuses of the Zap2it Labs data.
Unfortunately this misuse has continued and grown. These misuses,
combined with other business factors have led to the decision to
discontinue Zap2it Labs effective September 1, 2007.

We thank those users who have honored the terms of the agreement, and we
suggest you consider the many TV listings options offered by the
commercial licensees of TMS TV listings data.

If you would like to discuss how to license TV listings for commercial
use, please let us know by e-mail (labs[at]zap2it.com) and include your
company name, telephone number and the best time to reach you. We will
respond to your inquiry as soon as possible.

We anticipate this decision will generate discussion and invite you to
respond via the Zap2it Labs forum. We will do our best to respond to
relevant questions posted on this forum in a timely manner.

READ the list archives. This has been discussed several hundred times
in the last few weeks. Currently there is no solution but a lot of
discussion about alternate sources and distribution methods if we do
get an alternate source.

Please take the time to read the forum backlogs before posting more on
this subject. There are at least 500 other posts on this subject with
the synopsis being that there is nothing to be done right now and that
the devs are working on something. So sit back and relax and enjoy your tv.

Is there any kind of official update from the devs on this? There is no
mention at all of this obviously-critical issue on the mythtv website,
and the wiki doesn't really have anything more current than a few weeks.

Reading the archives of this list is essentially useless as far as
getting an idea of what is actually happening - there isn't much
official comment from devs, and just a lot of discussion about potential
ideas from end-users. I can certainly sympathize with those who haven't
read the hundreds of emails regarding this topic.

It would be nice when people post emails asking where things are if we
could just say see http://mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Data_Direct instead
of telling them to read the 5000 emails for the last month off the list.
But, for that to be of much value the website would actually have to
indicate what is going on. I suspect I know as much as most people on
this list, which is basically not much other than somebody is looking
into it...

I usually tell people to READ the list archives if they say something
like "I just heard that zapit is shutting down is there a new service
to replace it". To me this is very obvious that they did not even try
to research the subject so I usually get a little upset at that. I
will get even more upset if the same question was asked 3 hours ago.
However, sometimes (depending on my mood) I will summarize what has
gone on in the lists so If they just read just 1 week back they should
have found at least 1 summary of that. I know that others do this as
well. With that said I will direct people to the wiki as this is much
better than repeating myself 3 times a day...

We're not saying to read the 5000 emails for the last month. Reading
just one of them would be enough to know that you shouldn't start a
new thread on the exact same subject that's being discussed
elsewhere. If you have more to say on the subject, add it to the
current thread. It's not that difficult a concept.

We (MythTV, XMLTV and other devs) are not ready for an official
announcement yet, but very getting close. I would say chances are very
good (85%+) we'll have a solution in place before a Z2L shutdown.
Sorry I can't give any details yet....

Robert,

Thank you for the update!

At first, 85% made me feel comfy. Then I realized how horrific life
would be without lineups. I guess I need to figure how I'd go about
scraping the info I need from my cable provider's web site, just in
case...

Go ahead and feel comfy. There are a number of folks working on other
solutions (scrapers, etc). The problems with those solutions are
questionably legality and possibility that the data sources would change
things w/o notice.

My 85% number is for the free or pay scalable solution being worked on
by the MythTV (and other) devs. Other numbers I've made up are 50%,
then 75%... it keeps getting better.

Thanks for the update, Robert!! A little info is always better than none!

If you are at liberty to say, will the eventual solution use the same
zap2it .wsdl, or will we all need to upgrade to the "latest and
greatest SVN to use it?

I certainly understand your frustration, but keep in mind that finding
those summaries with all the noise on this list would not be simple.
The website is probably the best place to put updates.

BTW - I'll post this here so as to not create more noise, but thanks for
the updates on the official progress!

Thanks for the update Robert. I have (VARY FOUNDED) faith in you all that
we'll be taken care of! Ya'll Rock!!! (I'm from Texas in case you don't
know what ya'll is, it's our version of "you all".) :)

...and, for those taking copious notes, please understand that *ya'll* is the singular pronoun.
More than one "ya'll" is referenced as *all ya'll*

Can't say. But if a new solution requires changing web addresses, etc.
I'm sure that there would be at least a point release, if not a full .21
revision, far enough in advance of the change for users to have time to
upgrade.

Actually, since it's a contraction of the words "you" and "all", the
proper spelling of it is y'all, not ya'll. (even verified by the spell
checker in this email program... lol).

Re: zap2it quitting on mythtv!?!?!?! [In reply to]

There are other PVRs that are working on a solution to
the zap2it problem. Unfortunately, they are windows
based, but you could always run the utilities in QEMU,
VMWare, etc. and then manually load the xmltv into
Myth.

Of the two I've seen, one scrapes Yahoo TV Listings
and the other gets data from TitanTV (using a UDID of
questionable origin). Maybe someone could port these
to linux for use with MythTV. In any case, we need to
have a *Free* solution in addition to any
pay-for-subscription type of service, in my opinion.
