irrecord problems

I'm trying to set up a new universal remote. I know that the IR signal
is being received because I get a response from most of the buttonson
the remote when running mode2. But when I run irrecord to create a
conf file I get this error after pressing some of the buttons:

irrecord: could not find gap.
irrecord: gap not found, can't continue

Funny thing is that some of the buttons that elicit a response with
mode2 don't seem to with irrecord.

Any idea what's going on here?

What kind of receiver are you using? Is the receiver
protocol-compatible with the remote control?

If you know what protocol your remote uses (i.e. RC-5 etc), are you
using the protocol header file in /etc/lircd.conf? Have you tried
running irrecord in raw mode, and if so, do you get the same results?

I don't know 'cos the receiver is a home-brew one I bought off eBay.
But it works fine with other remotes. And I figured it's receiving the
signals from the remote OK because mode2 shows a signal when I press
the buttons.

Is it possible to tell what protocol the remote is using somehow?

I'll give this a burl.

Thanks,

Re: irrecord problems [In reply to]

Have you tried xmode2 to see what the waveform looks
like. I built my own ir receiver and the receiver
picks up a bit of noise. This'll cause a problem with
irrecord as you'll get the gap issues. I've noticed
that too about irrecord not detecting some buttons but
by the time you get to the point of mapping buttons
all buttons should work; I think it has something to
do with the irrecord needs to determine the gap abd I
think it does it with a couple of passes. So start up
xmode2 and if you aren't pushing any buttons and you
see a waveform you could be getting stray signals.

You're right - it does sem to be getting some stray signals. However,
by using raw mode (--force) I was able to get it to the point where it
asks for button names etc. However, I thought when you completed that
all the button names and corresponding signals were supposed to be in
the conf file - but when I completed it none of the buttons had been
added to the file. The conf file basically started and ended up like
this:

begin remote

name /tmp/universal.conf
flags RAW_CODES|CONST_LENGTH
eps 30
aeps 100

ptrail 0
repeat 0 0
gap 44900

begin raw_codes

end raw_codes

end remote

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong now?

Regards,
Phill

Re: irrecord problems [In reply to]

So you got to the point where irrecord asks you for a
button name and then it asks you to hit the
corresponding button. After you hit the button it
should say Got it!. Did it do this? Did you end
irrecord properly. To do this, when it asks you for a
button name, you just hit enter and it should exit the
program and save your lircd.conf file.

You should start xmode2 and push some buttons to get a
feel for how long your waveforms are. For your intial
irrecord, I'd do this at night with the lights off and
I'd put some type of cover between the remote and the
receiver to avoid stray signals. When you're doing
this, it should say got it and give you the waveform
length. If you get a waveform length of 3, you
probably got a stray signal. After you get done,
you'll want to look at the lircd.conf file to make
sure everything looks okay. If it isn't, I'd redo
irrecord just for the buttons that didn't map properly
and name the file lircd2.conf. You can then cut and
paste from lircd2.conf to lircd.conf. This'll save you
from having to redo all buttons.
