rf keyboards

I've got a Lite-On Airboard:
http://www.digitalconnection.com/Products/Keyboard/sk7100.asp

It is small and has an integrated joystick so I don't need a separate
mouse. Problem is it's IR and it's range and line of sight are a
problem. I'm looking for something similar that is RF or some other
technology that doesn't have those issues. Any suggestions?

I came across the Scorpius P20, but it gets mixed reviews at NewEgg.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16823192001

Thanks!

I use the ATI Remote Wonder RF model. It has a mouse/keyboard built into
it. Fully supported by LIRC userspace drivers also.

I've no idea if it works under linux though, does anyone know?

Doh! I've just read the "customer reviews" on the link I posted and the
first one says "Yes, it works fine in Linux". So thats good news.
Think I'll be getting myself one after xmas.

Re: rf keyboards [In reply to]

I just picked up an Adesso WKB-4000US. Works fine with Linux; RF USB
keyboard with integrated touch screen and mouse buttons. I've only been
using it for about a week, but so far, I'm pretty happy with it. Cost is
approx. 85 USD.

Does this just connect with a usb stick or is there a cord to the receiver?

My frontend is in another room and I run the IR receiver through the wall.

If it is a stick Is the wireless signal is strong enough to go through
a wall? What kind of range do you get on it?

Re: rf keyboards [In reply to]

I have tried a number of wireless keyboards...

1. Logitech EX110-just a few feet range
2. Kensington-2.4 wireless-range was about 10 feet...and I think it was
interfering with my wireless network (or visa versa)
3. Microsoft Media Center keyboard-IR...but did not work without media
center remote...and then you had to download a program that would have the
keyboard work with the media center remote sensor...so no Linux

Was about to give up...but kept thinking about trying a bluetooth keyboard
and mouse. Saw the Logitech 5000 on sale one day (not cheap--on sale for
$120.00 US) However, it works surprisingly well. Range is at least 30 feet
and it does work through walls. The only problem that I have had is it will
(sometimes, but not often) lose the connection. You can have it reconnect
without much problem. I am using Knoppmyth and it appears there is a
Bluetooth driver that is working through that, but I am not sure of that.
The keyboard comes with a laser mouse that works from the same distance and
works well.

A keyboard with an integrated screen? A touchscreen at that? Not bad for
85USD...

I'd bet he means "touch pad" :-)

Since everyone's mentioning their favorite, I'm using a "Gyration" RF
keyboard and mouse. The mouse is interesting in that you can wave it
in the air without having to place it on a surface to operate (though
it will work that way as well).

Of course I don't use a mouse with Myth.

I used to have one of those. Initially I liked it a lot; the RF range
was exceptional, and the devices both worked well. I found the wavey bit
with the mouse very hard to use with any accuracy. I don't think it's
really much use for anything more demanding than waving in the general
direction of the screen during a powerpoint presentation; but it's a
neat feature for showing-off with.

I also found that the keyboard and/or mouse had a tendency to get
"off-message" as regards the RF channel they were supposed to be using,
and that resyncing them with the receiver was sometimes difficult.

One of the (too many) mouse-buttons eventually suffered a mechanical
failure, rendering the mouse unserviceable; this occurred only a year
after I purchased the stuff, which I think is too early for
wear-and-tear problems to be showing up. And a short while later an
incident involving coffee resulted in progressive degradation of the
keyboard.

The outfit was duly retired and not replaced.

I think a lot of Myth features are like that, only used when showing
off the system. That's the only time I use PiP for example.

Never had that problem, even after moving the device from machine to
machine. Perhaps you had some RF interference: WiFi, Microwave oven?
Cordless phone? They all run in the 2.4Ghz. band.

I've often wondered about how many $$$ are spent yearly to repair/
replace coffee-induced electronics damage, probably Billions :-)

I use a toughball mini wireless keyboard
http://mediamad.co.uk/shop/product.php/2347/17//970613976a09aa4cb522f99040422382
, its RF and uses a single usb dongle, the function keys do not work
but otherwise it works very well with linux.

There is a scroll wheel on the left hand side that you cannot see in the photo.

It rests nicely on my lap and is equally usable on a table or sofa arm.

If i use the event device rather than the mouse device in xorg.conf
the trackball is too sensitive, a quick xset m 0 0 sorts that out.

I've been using a VersaPoint RF keyboard for a few years now. It works
very well. It has a built in mouse and great battery life. It's
fallen on my hardwood floor about a million times and I've never had
any trouble with it at all. I'd highly recommend it.

That looks very similar to the one that I have (toughball mini
wireless keyboard), I think it must be rebranded, the usb interface is
detected as belkin, the keyboard as Accuratus (r).

I was using an Inland RF keyboard for a while, but I kept having issues
where I'd come home and the Myth system was doing something bizarre.

After eliminating "kid messing with" and "cat walking on keyboard"
possibilities, I went to an IR keyboard, and have had no further troubles.
I suspect that RF interference was the issue.

I've been using the BTC 9019URF for a while:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16823110001

I don't recall what range is specified for it, but it works at more than the
4-6' specified for most RF keyboards. Mine is about 12' from the recliner to
the receiver, and I've never had connectivity problems. The thumb-operated
joystick can be switched between use as a pointing device and use as a
joystick; as long as joystick support is compiled into your kernel, you can use
it with games and such. I suspect the buttons across the top could be made to
work by tweaking xmodmap or whatever, but I've not gotten around to doing that.

Since moving, when we turn the lights on in the living room it will unpause
mythtv. I guess the IR reciever is just a tad too sensitive! ;-)

I googled this to try & find larger photos. To anyone considering
this keyboard: you can easily find it a tenner cheaper elsewhere. I
haven't provided a link because I haven't searched thoroughly, and
you might well do better if you shop around.

Stroller.

Hi, does anyone know of a USA vendor for this keyboard? My googling only
turned up european sources. It looks ideal for Myth.

I've got the same keyboard, works well. I picked mine up at ergogeek:

http://ergogeek.com/index.php?target=products&product_id=233

There are a few things that I'm not crazy about:

The receiver is a small box that sits at the end of a USB cable

The keyboard is closer to a laptop layout than a typical 101 key in
layout and feel, which often throws me off when working on the machine
directly.

It's somewhat tricky to do any precision 'mousing' with the stick
(machine maintenance, too lazy to go to another machine and ssh in for a
trivial tweak).

Otherwise, I like it a lot. Even works fine through a wall, battery
life seems to be pretty good as well.

I'm currently using xhkeys for mine.

I ended up with this one from Directron. It blows away the IR one I
had. I'm using it in another room from my PC. It has to go through a
wall and a desk and still works at about 15ft. Much past that it
starts to get flaky. I agree with Andrew that the mouse is a touch
sensitive, but I haven't tried his fix yet.
