Mythfrontend on a Wii - ever posible?

Ok this one is way out there but, would there even be any possibility of
running a mythtv frontend on the new Nintendo Wii games console?

Im guessing it's obviously possible on the PS3 with it's Linux support,
I think it's possible on an Xbox (at least some media center app is...)
and therefore maybe also a 360 (like I can be bothered to check...) but
as a Wii is the only console I can even be bothered to think about
getting (for a ~£500 ps3 I can just get another pc) I was just wondering
if I'd ever be able to stream or otherwise access content from my PC to
it, and then thought "wouldn't it be great if..." but afaik there's no
ability to boot seperate OSs on it, and therefore run mythtv. Anyway, if
any one knows any better, like "no, no one'll ever use it for much more
than a games machine" then err.. feel free to dash my hopes completely :oP

Christopher

I doubt that it would work very well on the PS3. Although there is a
Linux release for the PS3 from Terrasoft (The Yellow Dog folks) it
does not support any sort of video acceleration, it just treats the
video hardware as a dumb frame buffer.

This has caused a lot of lamentation on the YDL list, and the
situation may change in time, but I wouldn't count on it any time
soon as the video is under control of the HyperVisor so even a
solution similar to the present nVidia binary blobs is unlikely.

I would expect it to happen shortly after nVidia releases the source
code for it's present video drivers, otherwise known as a cold day
in ... :-)

Sure there is. The Gameshark exploit appears to work on Wii the same as it
does on the GC. That should get you booting linux no problem. Problem is
the same as the PS3 video accel, and memory.

I, too, am curious about this. It seems like it might be possible for
somebody to implement the frontend as a Wii Channel rather than
requiring that the Wii run Linux. I could be oversimplifying things as I
don't know anything about Wii Channel Development, but considering that
the Wii has the facility to run apps that are not on a game disk (in the
form of channels) and can access the network natively, it just seems
like it should be possible.

But I'm sure it's just a pipe dream :).

In order to write a Wii channel, I'm assuming you'd need a licensed Wii
developer's kit, which is probably prohibitively costly. However, I've been
successful in scheduling recordings in MythWeb via the Opera browser on the
Wii, and it can also play back flash videos from a web page. Live TV and
traditional channel surfing may be out of the question for now, but with the
browser alone you can get a decent amount of functionality.

Actually, Wii developer kit is said to be about $1700 - not quite cost
prohibitive, and it certainly is an interesting idea.
