No audio; two weeks and still unsolved

Hi All,

I'm finally at my wits end. I cannot seem to get ALSA audio working
with Myth. After two weeks of searching, experimenting, and googling,
nothing seems to bring forth audio from Myth... However, I have noticed
that I am able to play sounds from the command line (with aplay). I
have set my audio device to "ALSA:default". The mixer is also set to
"default". Help?

-Jeff

Mike, thanks for your quick response to my plea for help ;-)
Unfortunately, it was a no-go. ""Mixer controls master" yielded:

==============
stream: start_time: 0.289 duration: 95443.795 bitrate=0 kb/s

Can't find control "Master" either. No PCM, no Master. What's going on
here? How can I find out what the mixer /does/ have in the way of
controls? This is just an NVidia NForce4 chipset, is there not support
for this (hard to believe)?! Well wait, command line aplay works,
alsamixer too. I'm back to square one. Where do I go from here, start
writing a volume control script? That seems unlikely to be the right
action... My gut is telling me something else is wrong, and I just
don't know where to look.

So, you need to use a script like the one in the post I linked to
(probably just use that one and customize as described in the
comments). You can find out what controls are available with:

amixer scontrols

If it is this one...then it's fixed in v0.20
http://cvs.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/1217

I had the problem with that too, I was using v0.19 and nvdia HDA on
board sound. It forced me to disable internal mixer, the result is I
lost control to the nicam broadcast, which the station broadcasts two
independent langangues over L/R channels.
After upgrading to v0.20, it's fixed and works like a charm. My mixer
device is "ALSA:default".

Re: No audio; two weeks and still unsolved [In reply to]

Interesting! The amixer reports:

======
Simple mixer control 'Headphone',0
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
Simple mixer control 'Front',0
Simple mixer control 'Front Mic',0
Simple mixer control 'Surround',0
Simple mixer control 'Center',0
Simple mixer control 'LFE',0
Simple mixer control 'Side',0
Simple mixer control 'Line',0
Simple mixer control 'CD',0
Simple mixer control 'Mic',0
Simple mixer control 'IEC958',0
Simple mixer control 'Capture',0
Simple mixer control 'Capture',1
Simple mixer control 'Input Source',0
Simple mixer control 'Input Source',1
======

So, it would appear that I do in fact have a PCM control, and that
should've worked. So I backed up a bit and set the thing up for "mixer
controls PCM" again. Here's what came out (after restarting the software):

======
0: start_time: 0.036 duration: 8589.932

======

Still trying to find control "Master" ... which does not appear in my
mixer controls. PCM does, but Master does not. Strange not to have any
Master level control, I would think. But that may be another issue for
later. (or not...)

Anyway, my question has now morphed into "Can you use PCM control
without having a Master control, too." Because if the answer is NO, I
am still hosed and that explains the error message "mixer unable to find
control Master". Back to the script solution in that case.

Since my motherboard is new, and based on NVidia NForce430, I would
expect that a lot of people would be having this same kind of problem.
But this does not appear to be true (is it?). So I am still expecting
to find that I have misconfigured something along the way.

Does the presence of PCM (and not Master) shed any new light on the
situation?

Hi Sam,

This is very interesting. I just finished posting a followup wherein I
have discovered that I do have a "PCM" control, but not a "Master"...
this would seem to fit the bill. I will try updating to v0.20!!

Thanks,
-Jeff

ya it looks for both AFAIK. So if you have one of them missing, you are
doomed...

I guess you better try the patch, or simply upgrade to v0.20. it's not a
problem of alsa, soundcard or configuration, but mythtv...

You're not doomed yet! :) My Intel HDA has no Master but does have a
PCM. The message "Cannot find Master" seems to come from changing the
Mixer from /dev/mixer to "default" as the sound HOWTO on the wiki
recommends. Using either /dev/mixer or the name of a valid control,
like PCM, for the Mixer setting should get rid of these messages.

This assumes you are not hooking your sound card to your A/V
equipment. In that case you're most likely bettter off disabling
MythTV volume control and using the A/V receiver to control your volume.
