Not able to watch or record video

New installation of mythtv on a dual opteron Fedora core 5 system. I
have an HD-3000 and PVR 500 cards in this system. I have left the
HD-3000 card out of the myth setup. The cards are working without
mythtv.

I was getting a diagnostic message about the video file being empty
after 2000 milliseconds and the file was 0 length when I tried to watch
TV. Since I upgraded to myth 0.19-129 I no longer get that diagnostic or
an empty file it just does not work.

I see nothing logged to the terminal window that would indicate a
problem. The backend and setup seem to be working fine. In case it helps
the video card is an Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT and the driver is the
current update from the livna repo, 8762. I also configured the front
end to run in a window.

Finaly my other mythtv system with an ATI Wonder tuner has always worked
without any issues.

Not able to watch or record video [In reply to]

Please check that you are not getting vmalloc messages in your
/var/log/messages file. Or try "cat /proc/meminfo" (no quotes), is
vmalloc used is close to the total then you have vmalloc problems. If you
have 1GB of memory or more then you have LESS vmalloc memory than on 768MB
of memory... go figure! Search mythtvtalk where I've put the solution
(not a paid ad, I just can't be bothered retyping it!).
http://www.mythtvtalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3064&highlight=vmalloc

If not, then good luck anyway in finding it.

Not able to watch or record video [In reply to]

Hi

I had problems changing channels in mythtvfrontend. But I was no problem
playing recorded programs. If you have this problem you can try to use the
latest ivtv cvs release
From ivtv-user mail list

*I'd like people to have a go with the 0.4.6 and 0.6.3 development
snapshots available here:*

*0.4.6:

*0.6.3:

*The channel changing problem should be fixed now (and should be a bit
smoother too as the encoder is no longer paused/resumed). Please let me
know if there are still problems with it. Also test if you didn't have
problems before: it's done differently now (similar to what Hauppauge
does) so if I'm unlucky it might break something that used to work :-(*

I would check the backend logfile (typically
/var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log if using atrmps) but can be specified
in /etc/sysconfig/mythbackend. If you don't see anything there, you
could turn on verbose logging of recording (see mythbackend -v help
for logging options). The backend log is the first place to check for
issues.

It could be access permissions to either the recording devices, or to
the storage location, or a tuning issue - make sure the backend
process's owner can read from the capture devices and can write to the
storage. The video card should not interfere with the recording
process, but could affect playback if the card is not installed
properly.

No go, for this version. It looked like it was going to work as I was
able to view a channel but when I tried switching channels it hung and
the mythbackend.log had an entry saying the ivtv driver stopped
responding.

I also tried viewing channels using ivtv-tune and mplayer. The first
tuner seemed to work. Mplayer hung on the second tuner and I had to
reboot the system.

So went back and tried version 0.6.2 with the latest version of myth and
yesterdays kernel update, 2.6.16-1.2133_FC5. I was able to watch a
channel in myth but when I tried to change channels it also hung.

Finally I found another interesting bug.
2006-06-14 19:48:10.635 AutoExpire: ERROR when trying to autoexpire
file: /export/home/recordings/1057_20060614052427.mpg. File doesn't

Myth seems to be having issues deleting files and it keeps logging
messages. I wonder how long it will take before it fills up the root
drive logging these messages. You delete them in the web page and wait a
few seconds and they come back.

I should have checked the logs to see if there was any information that
may help you. Here is what I see in /var/log/messages.
Jun 14 19:20:37 douglas kernel: ivtv1 warning: 1000 ms time out waiting

Was still complaining during the shutdown process.

Hi

I had the same problem you have, but I have only one tuner card PVR-350. The
channel changing problem was solved for me with this cvs version. But if it
don't work for you try using ivtv 0.6.1 which also solved this probelm for
me.
This new cvs release needs testing and I has been nice if you reports your
problems back to the ivtv-developers . Here is the mailing list subject

Re: Not able to watch or record video [In reply to]

Hi again

I seems like the firmware has not been loaded. Have you checked if the
firmware has been loaded and do you use the correct version? Is the firmware
placed into the correct location? Have you tried shutting down the computer
and take out the power and wait 30 seconds? Read more of this here
http://ivtvdriver.org/index.php/Firmware
Try
/sbin/rmmod ivtv and then /sbin/depmod -a and the /sbin/modprobe ivtv
Use dmesg | grep ivtv and check to see if you have any errors.

I have updated the firmware to the latest version which did fix the
snowy video and audio issues. I had also checked the dmesg output and
found no problems noted.
