Getting teletext working on a PVR350

Hi all,

I've put some time in trying to get teletext working, but I seem to be missing
something obvious.

I am using a PVR350 card. The /dev/vbi* devices are available (and display something when cat-ted).
The mythtv-setup has PAL-Teletext for the VBI type.
I've enabled teletext and embedding in the mpeg stream using ivtvctl.

However, when I try to view teletext in mythfrontend, nothing shows up.
Any help?

Ronald.

What version of Myth are you running?

0.19-fixes

If you are using the built-in MPEG decoder on the PVR-350 for video out
(i.e. you have the "Use the PVR-350s MPEG decoder" box checked under
Setup) then you need to use your TVs teletext decoder, not the one in
Myth. If you're using xv instead (i.e. the box is not checked) then you
can use the one in Myth. And you may need to turn on cc/teletext
embedding in your ivtv driver when you load it, I'm not sure the extent
to which Myth handles that itself.

This is no longer true now that Myth has support for ivtv vbi. You can
use either the MythTV OSD or the TV's caption decoding.

What type of setup do you use to pass the data to the TV if you're not
using the PVR-350s MPEG decoder? What would prevent you from having both
decoders active at the same time?

In my experience, the caption data is not present in the video signal
unless you are using the built-in MPEG decoder; with that option off
it's not passed on to the TV for decoding so you're forced to use Myth's
built-in decoder.

There's only a "both" if you are using the PVR-350's decoder. In the
case that you are, you could actually activate Myth's decoding and the
TV's decoding at the same time.

Exactly. But Myth's built-in decoder works whether you're using a
PVR-350 or not. Granted, I've never done this, but some guy named
"Isaac Richards" told me I was wrong when I said you had to use the TV's
decoder with the PVR-350 after reading some posts--all relying on
information from one of your posts--that said so. ;) See
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/195330#195330 (quoted
text, also, to see all the relevant history).

Unfortunately, this still doesn't answer my question of whether Dan
believe Brad (who believed you). ;)

I vaguely remember reading that, but in any case I think Isaac either
misunderstood the situation or else he's just wrong. Myth's decoder
displays nothing if you are using the PVR-350's built-in MPEG decoder.
At least on my system is doesn't. I'd be really happy to be proven wrong...
