Strange sound issue

When searching for a solution for my sound problem, I've noticed that
in the dmesg output, I get a "kernel tainted" message. I've searched
and can't come up with a solution. I can post the exact error
when I get home if necessary.

I'm using the onboard audio (intel8x0) that appears to load
properly, but I get no sound. When I try to run alsamixer,
I get a segmentation fault. Where does alsamixer come from?
Is it provided by anything on atrpms? Is there a way for me
to force reinstallation to see if that could fix it?

Thanks,
Paul

Kernel tainted simply means that you're using a non-free driver with
your free kernel. The "solution" is to use only open-source drivers.
In the real world, however, you'll find that some of the non-free
drivers are useful (i.e the NVIDIA video drivers), whereas some (like
the NVIDIA nForce, ethernet, sound drivers) aren't necessary as the free
drivers are as good (or better). (Note that last sentence reflects my
opinion, not a "proven fact.")

alsamixer is from alsa-utils. However, I don't know what atrpms calls
their package that contains the programs from the alsa-utils sources,
and I don't know how to use RPM's, so I'll leave those to someone else.
