Correct way to de-int NTSC on nVidia MX440?

Is there a decent way to deinterlace NTSC with the
S-Video output on an nVidia MX440? I just can't seem
to get it right. I have a 37" Toshiba (non HD) TV, so
artifacts from the interlacing are quite obvious.

I've found that only the bob ('n weave) deinterlace
truly deinterlaces properly. (Though I think kernel
deinterlace and linear blend may look a tad better
than not deinterlacing.) The problem is, bob
deinterlacing doesn't maintain sync, so when I'm
watching video, it will go in and out of jittering the
image. When it's in sync it looks great.

I've tried to run nvtv on the box, but it always
segfaults. I eventually found in the documentation
for nvtv that it won't work with MX440 video cards.

Anyway, if anybody out there has managed to get good
deinterlacing with the TV output from a MX440, I'd
really like to know how it's done. Is there some way
to align the scanlines of the TV out to every-other
line in the 640x480 screen, for example?

FWIW, the modeline I'm using for video output is:

ModeLine "640x480" 25.20 640 664 760 800 480 491
493 525

The monitor section looks like this:
Section "Monitor"
DisplaySize 240 180 # mm
HorizSync 30-50
Identifier "Monitor[0]"
ModelName "M991"
# Option "DPMS"
VendorName "Toshiba"
VertRefresh 60
UseModes "Modes[0]"
EndSection

And the "device" section looks like this:
Section "Device"
BoardName "GeForce4 MX440SE"
BusID "1:0:0"
Driver "nvidia"
Identifier "Device[0]"
Screen 0
VendorName "NVidia"
Option "NvAGP" "1"
# Option "NoLogo" "true"
Option "HWCursor" "true"
Option "RenderAccel" "true"
EndSection

While the module section looks like this:
Section "Module"
Load "glx"
Load "type1"
Load "extmod"
Load "dbe"
Load "freetype"
Load "v4l"
EndSection

In the "Screen" section I have
Section "Screen"
DefaultDepth 24

SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "640x480" "400x300" "320x240"
Viewport 0 0
EndSubSection

Device "Device[0]"
Identifier "Screen[0]"
Monitor "Monitor[0]"

##
Option "TVStandard" "NTSC-M"
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "TV"
Option "TVOutFormat" "SVIDEO"
Option "TVOverScan" "0.8"
##
EndSection

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Bump.

Is there really no one who knows how to get this
working?

Alternatively, does anyone know that you *can't* get
this working correctly.

Graphics card: MX440 nVidia-based with S-Video out
Myth: 0.18.1-fixes
Deint desired: Bob

not sure how helpful my info is, but I've played with a variety of pci
geforce cards with s-video out, with mostly the same results. im
pretty sure that one of them was an mx440. the s-video looked like
crap no matter what i did on any of them. one day for fun i ran the
s-video into an rf-modulator that was run into the tv, set to channel
4. the picture looked so much better that i just left it that way,
even though its sort of hokey. dont know what the rf modulator does
to the signal but it sure makes it look better.

Re: Correct way to de-int NTSC on nVidia MX440? [In reply to]

Thanks, I'll try it out with my Monster RF modulator.
I'm suspicious, though, that such a difference in
image quality might be due to the S-Video input to the
TV. I did manage to improve overall video quality
using "nvidia-settings". (Of course, I checked all
the "sync to v-blanks".)

In any event, my main problem remains: syncing myth's
output to the TV so I can use bob deinterlace. Has
anyone managed to do this with nVidia S-Video (SD)
output?

Some notes on TV output and deinterlacing are at
http://vaggen.net/~bjornko/interlace.php - there are also some test
patterns on that site, so try them out, they may help you get a
sharper image.

I found that for the sharpest image from my GeForce FX 5200 tv-out, I
had to use nvidia-settings to turn overscan off and turn the flicker
filter off. Either one of those would blur and soften the image. The
obvious trade-off is, no overscan.

Also, for interlaced output (such as tv-out), no deinterlacing should
be necessary. Although you can read the above page and decide for
yourself.

I found when I use Bob, I need to use OpenGL Vsync to prevent flicker.
The checkbox is right under the deinterlace method.

This is with a FX5200 to a 720p modeline.

Re: Correct way to de-int NTSC on nVidia MX440? [In reply to]

That's curious: I see no such checkbox under the
deinterlace method. Is this something in version
0.19? (Frankly, I'm using 0.18.1 at the moment, 0.19
is scaring me what with all the messages about
frontend crashes, etc. WAF could dive to new lows if
this "production" unit goes south for long.)

Are there significant improvements in deinterlace and
sync'ing in 0.19 for NTSC?

Yes.

Mike

BTW, people, see that key marked "Delete"? You may want to learn to use
it. ;)
