Button feedback in Myth UI

Hello

Is there a way to assign a beep sound to the button selections in
the MythTV UI? So that when I select items in a menu, I get a
"click" or "beep"? I loved this feature in my Tivo because I got
audible confirmation when I pressed a button (very handy when forward-
searching using 3 speeds of search).

I'd be happy to create some nice audio files to use for this
feature if need be.

Thanks,

As far as I know there is no way to add these sounds to the GUI as it
is. Maybe a plugin could do it or directly modifying the code to call a
player and play an assigned file each time. But as it is right now as I
understand it that cannot be done just by editing some setting in the
mythtv settings menus anywhere.

I was just thinking the other day how quiet MythTV is until you actually
start watching a show. Not that it needs to be really noisy, but some
feedback sounds might be nice.

It seems that there's not even anonymous read only type access to these

Nope, I think you're right. Bugmenot (http://www.bugmenot.com/) is
your friend. Or, even the handy FireFox BugMeNot extension
(http://roachfiend.com/archives/2005/02/07/bugmenot/).

What an odd statement. If you are starting to watch a show, what more
feedback do you need than your eyes?

Just my 2 cents...

The feedback would be when you press a button. When I'm fast-
forwarding through a commercial or through part fo a show, it's nice
to hear a beep letting me know that I've pressed the button and
jumped to the next level of fast-forward because it is not always
apparent on-screen. I may be in 2x FF when I want to be in 3x FF
mode. If I hear a beep when the button is pressed, I know that I'm in
teh right mode.

This beep exists on Tivo (it is a preference - it can be shut
off). I LOVE it. My brother shut it off on his tivo - he cannot stand
it.

To each, his own. . .

Re: Button feedback in Myth UI [In reply to]

Per something I found on the wiki somewhere, in the 'General' setup section
you can put something like "aplay -q /path/to/sound/file/soundfile.wav" in
the 'keypress application' area. This is a hack, but now that I have done
it it works quite well. Note that I had to restart the frontend application
to notice the change. Also note that it works for LIRC keypresses, not the
ones on the keyboard.

The knoppmyth link led me to a thread with some pretty cool sounds, but they
were a little obtrusive while browsing music.

I use the mediaportal software for myth-like functionality on my M$ Laptop.
Mediaportal (http://www.team-mediaportal.com/) has a really nice little
click sound for their cursor movements. I tried it in myth and it works
beautifully.

You can download thier butcher 2 theme at
http://www.team-mediaportal.com/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,35/func,select/id,11/
and find the cursor.wav file in the sound directory (it is the same sound as
in the main program's theme, just a smaller download.)

I will also host the file for anyone that is too lazy, but please email me
right away if you think it is some kind of violation. I dont think so cuz
the project is open-source, and the dev's have been nice to me with other
things in the past.

http://lisadaveh.home.comcast.net/myxer/cursor.wav

let me know what you think about possibly putting this in the wiki. I
suppose I could ask permission from one of the MediaPortal dev's and see if
they'd allow our wiki to host the file or something.

Re: Button feedback in Myth UI [In reply to]

your solution works great, except that it does not beep when I FFWD
or RW during playback or live TV. The aplay app stores the keypresses
and plays them back when I jump back into a MythTV menu.

beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep
beep beep beep

heh - pretty funny.

thanks,

That's because alsa:default as a sound device doesn't support playing
multiple sounds at the same time. It should be possible using either
alsa mixer or jack to allow mixing sounds for playback to a single
device.

So the only thing that makes it possible is the fact that alsa mixer
is installed? If I install alsa mixer (and adjust it properly) then
I'll be able to play back audio from 2 sources simultaneously?

There really should be a button feedback option in the myth setup menu at
this point, I have a really fast computer, and there is still lag when
opening mythmusic or something, and it would sure be nice to have feedback
on the buttonpresses so that you know when you hit a keystroke.

I totally agree. It's not so important in the main interface of
MythTV, where you get button feedback in the form of menu options
being highlighted or chosen (although I can think of a few times I've
been kissing my girl on the couch while navigating the UI, and I
didn't know if the remote was going anywhere because I could not hear
it).

Audio feedback is a very basic element in any media UI. Optional,
of course. You'd need to be able to shut it off if it annoys you).

I'd be happy to create beep sounds if needed. I work with audio
and waveforms regularly.

Thanks,

beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep
beep beep beep

heh - pretty funny.

Per something I found on the wiki somewhere, in the 'General' setup
section you can put something like "aplay -q
/path/to/sound/file/soundfile.wav" in the 'keypress application' area.
This is a hack, but now that I have done it it works quite well. Note
that I had to restart the frontend application to notice the change.
Also note that it works for LIRC keypresses, not the ones on the
keyboard.

The knoppmyth link led me to a thread with some pretty cool sounds, but
they were a little obtrusive while browsing music.

I use the mediaportal software for myth-like functionality on my M$
Laptop. Mediaportal ( http://www.team-mediaportal.com/) has a really
nice little click sound for their cursor movements. I tried it in myth
and it works beautifully.

You can download thier butcher 2 theme at
http://www.team-mediaportal.com/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,3
5/func,select/id,11/
and find the cursor.wav file in the sound directory (it is the same
sound as in the main program's theme, just a smaller download.)

I will also host the file for anyone that is too lazy, but please email
me right away if you think it is some kind of violation. I dont think
so cuz the project is open-source, and the dev's have been nice to me
with other things in the past.

http://lisadaveh.home.comcast.net/myxer/cursor.wav

let me know what you think about possibly putting this in the wiki. I
suppose I could ask permission from one of the MediaPortal dev's and see
if they'd allow our wiki to host the file or something.

Thanks,

Well, actually it's how you configure your .asoundrc to use dmix -
here's a lot of information on that subject (probably more info that
you want to know ;)

If only it were that simple...

The default "ALSA:default" device on some sound cards (i.e. SoundBlaster
Live! and any other "hardware" sound cards) allows multiple applications
to output to the sound card simultaneously on ALL versions of ALSA.

The default "ALSA:default" device on all sound cards (even "software"
sound cards like the NVIDIA NForce2 and other intel8x0-based cards)
allows multiple applications to output to the sound card simultaneously
on ALSA 1.0.9 and above.

If the user re-defines the "ALSA:default" device in his/her ALSA
configuration, whether multiple applications are allowed to output to
the sound card simultaneously depends on the sound card and the user's
custom definition of "ALSA:default".

Actually, it just requires upgrading your ALSA to 1.0.9+ or configuring
your ALSA properly (which works whether using ALSA 1.0.9+ or not).

http://mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Configuring_Digital_Sound#Setting_up_ALSA.27s_.asoundrc.2C_Properly
(even if you're not using digital sound).
