Various mythtv-frontend problems

I have run into the problem of mythfrontend
Segmentation faulting on me.

I have done some searching for this on the net, but
have yet to find a solution.

I am using a 64 bit Intel processor with FC4 x86_64.
Full mythtv install from ATRPMs (with packages updated
Dec 02/05).

Let it be known that I am strictly an RPM-only person.
I have no idea on compiling anything.

My questions:
1) What is causing the Segmentation fault?
2) Where is the bad Huffman code? Is it simply a
corrupt image?
3) What is causing the QT issue?

Here is the output I am getting:

mythtv at localhost ~]$ mythfrontend

From the looks of things you're running i686 code when it's expecting x86_64.
Try either a i686 rpm of mythtv or update QT to x86_64

Yes, G.A.N.T. theme by any chance?
themes/G.A.N.T/bkg/grey.jpeg was the culprit in my case, replaced with the
original from the 18.1 download at www.mythtv.org and all was good.

Looks pretty clear to me, its looking for the x86_64 version but found the
(incompatible) i686 version.

I'm pretty similar to you, being a RPM only person. The way I got
around the SegFault is by removing some of the plugins (which is fine
for me, LiveTV and Recorded Shows are the important for our household
- I'll try again once 0.19 is released)

I'm assuming you followed Jarods' guide like I did, so you could try
the following to get mythfrontend to launch:

yum remove mythdvd

then try launching mythfrontend. You'll probably get a SegFault with
MythMusic at that point, so remove mythmusic, and repeat. You'll
probably need to remove MythDVD, MythMusic, MythGallery and MythPhone.

Strange that I used FC4 x86_64 DVD to install the OS.
Would I really expect QT i686 to be lurking in there?

Both qt-3.3.4-14.i386.rpm and qt-3.3.4-14.x86_64.rpm
should be installed, but not i686

Thanks, I will try that.

As stated above I don't use i686 anything. All rpms
are either i386 or x86_64 (or both for some packages).
Is the plugin perhaps using qt for i686 elements and
x86_64 FC4 can't work with them?

Thanks for your quick reply David,

Actually I think I miss-read that the wrong way round, it's the plugins that
are built against i686 when they should be against x86_64

>Plugin uses incompatible Qt library!
>expected build key "x86_64 Linux g++-4.* full-config",
>got "i686 Linux

ie expecting to find the plugin was built under x86_64 but was actually built
under i686.

As somone else wrote, try removing mythdvd, MythMusic, MythGallery and
MythPhone and see if that works.
Then try reinstalling making sure to use x86_64 versions of the plugins, if
they fail then check with the package maintainer.

Of course I'm not using fedora, yum or x86_64 so what do I know. ;-)

Re: Various mythtv-frontend problems [In reply to]

In response to Druid and Wade,

I replaced grey.jpeg with that extracted from the
source file.
Problem solved. No more Huffman error messages.

Number two, this error disappeared on subsequent
executions of mythfrontend:

> > /usr/lib/qt-3.3/plugins/styles/bluecurve.so:
> > Plugin uses incompatible Qt library!
> > expected build key "x86_64 Linux g++-4.*

Not sure what fixed it, not sure its really fixed as
of yet.

Still getting the Seg Fault:

[mythtv [at] localhos ~]$ mythfrontend
2005-12-05 19:56:46.801 New DB connection, total: 1
Total desktop width=720, height=480, numscreens=1
2005-12-05 19:56:46.808 Using screen 0, 720x480 at 0,0
2005-12-05 19:56:46.810 mythfrontend version:
0.18.1.20050523-1 www.mythtv.org
2005-12-05 19:56:46.811 Enabled verbose msgs :
important general
2005-12-05 19:56:47.076 Switching to square mode
(G.A.N.T.)
2005-12-05 19:56:47.302 New DB connection, total: 2
2005-12-05 19:56:47.303 Joystick disabled.
2005-12-05 19:56:47.318 Registering Internal as a
media playback plugin.
2005-12-05 19:56:47.325 Inserting MythDVD initial
database information.
Segmentation fault
[mythtv [at] localhos ~]$

Now I'll try removing plugins until it works, but this
leads me to two more questions:

1) Is there an error log for the frontend that will
help me narrow down the plugin that is the cause of
the segfault?

2) Whom should I feed the bugreport back to: mythtv or
the rpm packager?

Thanks,

Beny

Re: Various mythtv-frontend problems [In reply to]

I have AMD Athlon 64 with FC4_64 also and I also have a Segment Fault in
that place. I tried launching mythtv by itself and it appears to work
but there are no controls. My tv card is a Hauppage WinPVR 150MCE
which is working fine with the ivtv drivers. I can play tv using
$ mplayer /dev/video0
So my card is set up fine. I don't know how to fix the problem but I
suspect it is being caused by the software attempting to jump to code
pointed to by an uninitialized pointer which would contain a 0. The
computer tries to execute code at memory location 0 and boom,
Segmentation Fault.

So that's probably what we have to look for in the code. It's probably
x64 specific code too.

Hope that helps or at least gives some hope,
Doug.

Looking at the messages above I'd say it's MythDVD causing your
problem. Try doing a "yum remove MythDVD" then launching
mythfrontend If your system is like mine, then you will not be
getting a SegFault just after the "Inserting MythDVD initial database
information." message.

You will however be getting a SegFault just after MythMusic or
MythGallery message instead.

I just repeated the process, removing each plugin (MythDVD,
MythMusic, MythGallery, MythPhone in my case) until mythfrontend
launched successfully. Then you can try adding the plugins back in
one by one, in the same order you removed them, and see if you get a
SegFault again (I did). So I left them disabled.

I haven't dug too deeply into this as I don't think I need to get
these plugins working for what I want, and I have no idea where/how
to look. Linux is all foreign to me (MythTV is my first foray into
Linux).

But if anyone else has any ideas of things to try I'm all ears.
