apt-get update problems and problems upgrading

I've had mythtv running for a little while now using FC3 and 0.17. I
originally set the system up using Jarod's guide (which is awesome).
apt-get update returned bunzip2 errors (error code (2)) with some of
the locations it tried to grab the new lists from. I have plenty of
disk space available. I am behind a firewall and router, I use DSL,
but I never had this problem before. (Specifically, when setting up
the box.) I have searched through the Atrpm's archive and the
myth-users archive and found nothing that seems to help. I
re-installed the latest version of bzip from the rpm (version 1.0.2)
which was what I was running before, and that didn't help.

I decided to go back to Jarod's guide and grab the specific new files
I needed for the upgrade. apt-get could not find the new kernel.
(apt-get install kernel=2.6.11-1.14_FC3). This seems to indicate that
the kernel that I want to install is not downloaded or in the index
that I get from apt-get update. I manually grabbed the kernel rpm, but
I would like to fix this problem since there are several packages
based on the kernel that I need to get.

After more digging, I found that my initial attempt at upgrading did
update mythtv to version 0.18. I am running my original kernel
(2.6.10-1.741) however I am still perplexed as to why apt-get didn't
find the new kernel and why it seems to be running wierd. I also tried
running synaptic to graphically grab what I need, and the new kernel
was not listed there as well. Oddly enough, synaptic seems to self
destruct. When I try to run it a second time, the executable is never
found. I tried apt-get clean. That didn't work either.

I finally have mythtv version 0.18 running however ivtv and lirc-i2c
are not loading on boot, so I have to manually go in and load them and
then re-load mythbackend. This always seems to result in fuzzier than
normal video from my hauppauge 250 tuner card. I went in and
re-arranged the ivtv and tuner related entries in my modprobe.conf
file but I have not re-booted yet. I seem to recall that I had to go
in somewhere before and add extra modprobe lines specifically for ivtv
and lirc_i2c so that they're called before mythbackend. I can't find
them now and I can't find where I read that.

If anyone has any ideas as to what else I can try to get apt-get
working better short of slicking and doing a full re-install, please
let me know. I consider myself half-capable at linux, I think if I can
get pointed in the right direction as to where to look to fix these
problems, I'll be alright.

Thanks for your help,
Bill

Just an FYI, not really a solution to your problem, but I subscribe to
the "if it ain't broke dont' fix it" philosophy. In my short time
working the Myth I've seen more people pose questions with problems
start with "I did an apt-get update/upgrade and now..."

If you're trying just to upgrade MythTV to 0.18, don't upgrade your
entire system with apt-get including the kernel. You're changing too
many variables to make it easy to diagnose what the problem is.
Instead, just update what is required by upgrading MythTV only and I
think you'll find you have far fewer issues. This is why my master
backend is still running Redhat 9 and I don't do apt-get upgrade on it
for anything unless something breaks.

I have been having the same problems (bunzip2 errors with apt-get) for a
couple of days.

Seems to be server related so I am hoping it will get fixed soon. I
usually find it is best to wait, otherwise I end up breaking something else
in efforts to fix it!!

I just started having problems today as well. Glad to hear it's just not me.

Welll....I am getting an IVTV INTR error. So I tried the Fc2 apt-gets and was having problem with those as well. I saw that FC2 is now legacy and don't want to be left behind. So I am trying to upgrade to FC3.

I ran into this this weekend and quickly found the answer in the
archives. This was discussed a few days ago. The subjects all
contain the phrase "apt-get". I can't beleive that there are so many
"me too" to this, when it was discussed already!

You must edit your /etc/apt/sources.list. The entry for
freshrpms.net is no longer correct. You need to add us5 to the front
of the address. Again, search the freaking archives for the entire
answer.

I would hardly call 6 as "so many, me too's".
I have over 1000 emails in my gmail labels for Mythtv. I can't
remember everyone. The problem was not a big deal for me yet so I
hadn't started looking for a solution. I was just simply saying I was
glad I wasn't the only one seeing this.
Thanks for the help Ryan.

Re: apt-get update problems and problems upgrading [In reply to]

Thanks for the flame. Obviously your web capabilites are far superior
to mine. Gotta work on those people skills though. I've just gone
through the past 3 months of mythtv-users archives and mythtv-dev
archives and I still haven't found an entry for the solution you
suggested. Google didn't turn up anything either. BTW, I did search
through these over the weekend in frustration and didn't find anything
then either.

Found lots of stuff on apt-get install or apt-get dist-upgrade killing
stuff and upgrading from FC2. But nothing on apt-get update screwing
up.

After visiting http://ayo.freshrpms.net, the mirrors listing at the
bottom of the page lists the us mirror as ayo.us5.freshrpms.net. Your
solution did not imply what appears to be the correct address. I'll
try this tonight.
