Component Video Output??

Hi all:

I am sorry to ask this on list; it seems like its a "standard question",
but hours of googling still left me with more questions than answers.

I'm working on building a myth box. Currently, it will not be HD (no
HDTVs or HDTV sources currently). However, my TV does have component
input (Y, Pr, Pb). I'd like to utilize this.

I also would rather not spend $100+ on a VGA transcoder if that's
possible. I've found some cards like:
http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_10_2/ati-aiw-9700-pro-6-2003.html
(ATI all-in-wonder 9700)
That have component output built in. However, I was planning on using a
PVR-250 as my input.

I've also found http://www.trianglecables.com/dvi-hdtv200.html (Radeon
DVI-I to component converter, $29) that is mentioned for working with
certian Radeon cards. However, I haven't heard much good (and I have
heard a fair bit of bad) about ATI cards on this list.

I have not found any more general information. For example, is there a
converter like the $29 cited above that works generically with DVI-I?
(like an nVidia card with DVI-I?)

Is there a "tried and true" video card that supports component either
directly or with an inexpensive add-on? If so, what are they?

Ideally, I'm looking to spend $50-100 on the video output portion of the
box.

Thanks in advance!

The problem is that video cards output RGB, not YPrPb. So to use
component inputs, you have to convert RGB to YPrPb (not to mention
get your modelines right, which is an adventure in and of itself). I have
not heard of anyone getting the ATI HDTV adapter to work in Linux.

I bought a $150 transcoder from Key Digital, but you might could build
one a bit cheaper. See the following thread: http://tinyurl.com/5qlwl

You'll need to get several pages into it (or start at the end). Not for the
feint of heart, though, unless you are comfortable soldering surface
mount chips.

Jeff.

Sounds like they're basically doing what I have suggested with
regular VGA cards. They are using the 3 DACs that normally output R, G, B
to output Y, Pb, Pr. I'm pretty sure that the same thing could be done
with any video card the supports sync-on-green. If playing video via
XVideo extension could be told that the video card hardware YUV
translation but then not actually translate in the card... voila... no
color transformation necessary.

Of course, regular non-video would have some pretty psycho
colors... :)

I use the VGA-out from my box into an Audio Authority 9A60 converter box
to get component into my HDTV. Like you I do not use my Myth box for
HDTV, but at least my GUI and everything is a native 720p HD image on my tv.

The converter box was somewhat pricey, but it really works well. I got
mine on eBay for something around $150.
