Sky STB internal DC voltage.

Hi All

Does anyone know, off hand, what the internal DC supply for a typical (if
such exists) satellite STB is?

A friend has asked me if I can build a 12V to whatever supply to make a
Sk...... STB mobile (I know Sky don't like their STBs "migrating").This is
for use in a camper.
I haven't had a chance yet to get my hands and DMM on one,so I thought I
would ask.

Cheers

My skystar puts out 18V to power the LNB.

Cheers,
The LNBs have 14V or 18V supplied to them - this selects the polarisation
( Vertical or Horizontal).

I expect the internal supply may be 20V to 24V.I have found an adjustable
dc to dc convertor at Jaycar that will do up the 26V from an input as low
as 6V.This should do the trick.

Any reason why they don't just put an inverter in the camper?
An inverter would allow them to plug in any 230V appliance.

Two reasons

1) Inverting to 230V AC then rectifying back to 12V DC is a waste of
power, which is important if you're off the grid. Not so much if you're
in a caravan park with power.

2) Inverters don't generally create the cleanest AC wave form. Mine
puts out a two step square wave, which is enough to make a CRT buzz, and
also made the magic smoke come out of a watt-meter

There are special DVD/VHS players and TVs/monitors which have 12V DC in
and are designed to work in a caravan. I doubt many are
freeview-compliant though.

They have a "dirty" inverter which isn't recommended for electronic gear.
They don't want to buy another one just for the decoder;all the other
media gear is 12V.

My friends have a nice 21" Samsung semi-smart TV with a built-in DVD drive
that has Freeview and runs on 12V.

Hey Paul,

Have you considered purchasing a satellite receiver that will take a Sky
card? Go to your favourite search engine and look for 12v satellite sky
and you will find a few places in NZ that will supply them.

I've got a 12v Satellite STB in my bus and it works fine. I didn't get one
with Sky, but you should just be able to take the card out of your decoder
at home and put it in the camper.

Thanks for the suggestion - I will pass it on.

Is http://www.asoft.co.nz/kaon/kpsf200.htm of relevance?

I'll give my buddy the option of buying a 12V decoder or having a dc jack
fitted to his Sky STB and
12V to 20V convertor built. I can do that for $60.
Thanks for the info.
