dvd playback problem

Hi Guys
I have never bothered with using myth to play dvd's before as I had a
slow machine.
Build is mythbuntu 10.04 I have set up the restricted drivers through
the inbuilt system .
I have tested the dvd through VLC and except that I can only get
stereo sound, it plays fine.
Where do I go from here, thanks for any help.
Stu

Re: dvd playback problem [In reply to]

On my 10.04 system these packages seem to make DVD playback work:

mythvideo libdvdcss2 libdvdnav4 libdvdread4

I don't know if they are all necessary, but they are enough for Myth to play
copy-protected DVDs under "Optical Discs" => "Play DVD".

After checking mythvideo is installed..
Could pay to check the settings under frontend setup:media
settings:video settings:player settings:

Need to use "Internal" for default & DVD player (note the capital I)..
if this is what you want to use.
The internal DVD player works very well.
The mythtv player use of vdpau feature set C scaling & sharpening for
DVD playback is big step up..

Is another app or process taking exclusive access to the optical drive ?
Does mythtv user have access to optical drive ?

Shut down front end & insert new DVD.. What happens ?
If a system requester pops up prompting for action to perform, set No
action & tick always do this..

Do you get a mounted DVD disk & desktop icon with correct label/name ?

Re: dvd playback problem [In reply to]

Hi Nick and Brett
Had some issue getting log as the one I sent was bounced because of
size. In the end deleted all logs started sytem up from scratch
shutdown front end and checked it looked ok and the restarted and tried
to load dvd . It looks to me like it has a issue with loadeding the dvd,
but from there I would be lost.
answer to Bretts questions:
Dvd mounts on desktop and say what the disk is, no other action is
asked, from there I am able to run it in vlc but only in stereo and not
in dts to the amp but the signal is being passed by the optical cable.
And as my Linux ability is weak to at best how do I check that mythtv
has access to drive?
Once again thanks a lot for putting up with my lack of knowledge

Re: dvd playback problem more info [In reply to]

I have had a quick look using thunar file manager at the dev directory
and the only dvd I have is marked I believe dvd1 and there is also
dvdrw1 which I think would be right as the drive dvd writable drive and
the permission are as follows owed by root and access read write
group cdrom access read write others= none.
I hope this helps

Do NOT top post on this list please.

Do you have a file /dev/dvd. To test, do

ls -l /dev/dvd

This will also tell you the ownership and permissions.

The log clearly says that myth cannot access /dev/dvd, so let's see if
it there first, and if the user running mythfrontend has access to it.

The log reveals the problem:

libdvdread: Can't stat /dev/dvd
No such file or directory
libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version svnR1169
libdvdnav: vm: failed to open/read the DVD
2010-08-08 13:31:14.493 Failed to open DVD device at /dev/dvd

Mythtv is looking for the dvd at /dev/dvd. This is apparently not what your
dvd device is set up as. You need to correct the device name in Mythfrontend
setup->Media settings->Videos settings->General settings page 3. In my
system the dvd is /dev/cdrom, it could be that on your system or it could be
/dev/dvd0 or something else.

Cheers,
Steve
