MultiRec Turned Off?

I have 2 500T, comprising 4 tuners each with 5 virtual tuners set, yet for some reason multirec does not seem to work, that is I can
only seem to get one channel from each tuner. There are 20 encoders in mythweb. I cannot find a setting that turns off multirec.
Tonight I have a recording conflict as I am trying to record 5 overlapping things.... I cannot find a setting about this, as best I
can tell setting 2 or more virtual tuners turns multirec on and nothing should turn it off then? (Mythbuntu 23565)

Can anyone suggest how its turned itself off or where to look to move this forwards?

Does "Information Center/System Status/Tuner Status" show all 20
tuners? If so, then multirec should be working. I wonder if there is
a setting somewhere for the maximum number of recordings that can
happen at once. I am sure it would be possible to record so much that
a single hard disk could not cope with the traffic, so such a setting
would be a useful thing, especially if it could be set per hard disk.

Multirec is turned on by setting more than one recording per real
tuner, ie you have it turned on already.

How are your 5 recordings distributed through the various multiplexes?
I am not sure how many terrestrial multiplexes there are.

And when you say 'overlapping' do you mean 'simultaneous'? Or one
following another but with overlap to catch extra at beginning and
end?

Yes.

I've not found one.

This issue arises before the event, in scheduling, before the HDD and Hardware has had a chance to be tested. The HDD is a 3G SATA
with plenty of space, I doubt that 5 would max that out. The scheduling for some reason seems limited to one channel / one tuner.
Somewhere....

In the scope of the problem it doesn't actually matter as each channel is being sent to the next tuner, which it shouldn't as I
understand it. It should only go to the next tuner when its on a new multiplex.

>I am not sure how many terrestrial multiplexes there are.

Only three. (48, 50 and 59) With it working three tuners should be enough for recording all Freeview channels simultaneously,
hardware limits possibly relevant here. (Hence why I say "scope of the problem")

>And when you say 'overlapping' do you mean 'simultaneous'? Or one

The specifics are TV1, 2, C4,Maori all from 8.30 and Prime at 8.35 onwards... Does that help? TV1 is deemed to overlap and seems
to have a system assigned recording priority of -1! All my mythweb recording priorities default to 0.

My tuners are named T0, T1, T2 and T3. From Mythweb "Upcoming Recordings"

1) Conflict Doc Martin 1 - TV One Sun Feb 21, 2010 (08:30 PM) 1 hr
2) T1 Jaws 3 4 - C4 Sun Feb 21, 2010 (08:30 PM) 2 hrs 5 mins
3) T0 ??Norbit 2 - TV2 Sun Feb 21, 2010 (08:30 PM) 2 hrs
4) T2 Sunday Feature: Hidden 5 - Maori Television Sun Feb 21, 2010 (08:30 PM) 2 hrs
5) T3 Prime Presents: Last Chance To See 10 - PRIME Sun Feb 21, 2010 (08:35 PM) 1 hr 15 mins

1 and 3 should be on one multiplex (48)
2 the 2nd (50)
4 and 5 the third (59)

Makes me wonder if my channel setup is not correct, I put it up at http://imagebin.ca/view/nxWwOByI.html

The channel setup shown by mythweb is not complete - it misses out the
vital bits for DVB-T: mplexid and serviceid. To see them, you will
need to do a bit of SQL. The following presumes that you are running
a recent mythbuntu. Make a .sh file with this in it:

#!/bin/bash

# Run MySQL to access the mythconfig database.

source /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt
mysql -u $DBUserName -p$DBPassword -h $DBHostName $DBName

and chmod it to be executable. Run it and you will get a mysql
prompt. I find it is best to do this from a xterm, so that you can
use a very wide screen. Then paste in this command and see what the
mplexid and serviceid shows:

select
chanid,channum,freqid,sourceid,callsign,name,xmltvid,mplexid,serviceid
from channel;

Ouch, that is a bit of a mess and could be the cause of your problems.
There should only be one row in the channel table for each channel.
There are two rows for most. One of the rows for each channel has the
correct xmltvid and an invalid NULL mplexid, and the other row has the
correct mplexid (and presumably serviceid - it did not show in your
post), but is not associated with the EPG by an xmltvid. It looks
like you did the tuning twice - mythtv has problems if you do that. I
had a similar looking channel table to yours after I tuned twice.

You need to merge the two rows for each channel to make one valid one.
Copy the values for xmltvid into the rows that have the correct
mplexid/serviceid, then delete the other row. Or the opposite way
around, depending on what you want for the chanid. What I would do
with this is to export the entire channel table to a .sql file, edit
the .sql file in SlickEdit on my Windows box (as SlickEdit understands
SQL), and then drop the channel table and re-create it by importing
the edited SQL file.

For reference, this is what the DVB-T channels in my channel table
look like. The freqid, mplexid and serviceid are, of course, for here
in Palmerston North (Wharite).

Here is the dump_mythtv_table.sh script I use to dump a mythconverg
table to a .sql file:

#!/bin/bash

# Dump a table from the mythconverg database.

source /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt
mysqldump -u $DBUserName -p$DBPassword -h $DBHostName $DBName $1

Use it like this:

dump_mythtv_table channel >channel.sql

to export the channel table for editing. Keep a copy of the original
version of channel.sql in case anything goes wrong and you need the
original version back again.

Here is a script that should then drop and recreate the channel table
from your edited channel.sql file:

#!/bin/bash

# Run MySQL to access the mythconverg database.

source /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt
mysql -u $DBUserName -p$DBPassword -h $DBHostName $DBName <channel.sql

and for reference here is the dumped channel.sql file from my
database:

--
-- Host: 10.0.2.4 Database: mythconverg

I have edited out all the Sky channels, leaving only the DVB-T ones,
and prettied up the formatting to make it readable. Your newsreader
will probably wrap the long lines (mine does), so you may need to save
this post as a text file to make it properly readable.

Re: MultiRec Turned Off? [In reply to]

Hi,

After looking at picture and comparing it with my own settings (3
digital tuners) I realised that you should have 4 different sources
for the same program id, currently you have 20 'tuners' but only one
of them has channels and programs. The easiest way to fix that is to
start mythtv-setup and remove all inputs, re-add them and scan
channels to add them again. Since all your cards are DVB-T you should
have exactly the same programs on all of them. That should fix your
problems.

kind regards
Pshem

No. All the tuners are receiving programs from the same source: freeview.
They should all have the same sourceid as they do. If you have three
different sources for your 3 tuners then your system is set up sub-optimally
(i.e. it may still work but it's not the "best" way to set it up).

Re: MultiRec Turned Off? [In reply to]

Wow, thanks guys, especially Stephen, the scripts and reference table is very helpful, perhaps already for more than just me.

I did do a number of scans as things weren't right, e.g. the LiveTV up and down arrows did not display all the channels, although
they were there when selecting the channel numbers. Also the correct values to enter when running tv_grab_nz-py were not that
obvious to me, which may have been part of the problem, I was going to publish the data for next time, however clearly that would
just mislead others as I currently have it.

I think this is all meant to be one line:

(1001,'1','48',1,'TV ONE','TV
ONE','/home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels/tv_one.jpg',0,'','tv1.freeviewnz.tv',0,32768,32768,32768,32768,'Default',1,'',1,1,1200,0,0,0,'2010-02-21
19:29:01','crid://tvnz.co.nz',-1),

however the spaces have been interpeted as line feeds for "TV ONE" and "'2010-02-21 19:29:01'".

Looks to me that the table is the same for Warite and KauKau. I'll have a go at this when its not recording. I imagine playing
with the table while recording might cause issues. I'll let you know if that fixes the multirec.

Thank you again.

Actually I think how it got to be like that is:

These are added when running the (one) Tuner Scan:

Seems that's not the correct way to do it?

I had problems running tv_grab_nz-py in setup mode, and ended up
manually configuring things instead of using setup mode. I just
manually created a FreeviewHD.xmltv file in my /home/stephen/.mythtv
directory, and linked my /home/mythtv/.mythtv directory to
/home/stephen/.mythtv. That made it all work.

Yes, each of those row entries are all on one line, from the '(' to
the ')'. I do not know how it might have been mangled in
transmission, but I would try saving the whole post as a text file -
that might get around the line wrapping problem. If not, you will
need to join the lines again carefully. Hopefully the space between
"TV" and "ONE" will still be there and you can just remove the line
feed or carriage return and line feed characters.

>Looks to me that the table is the same for Warite and KauKau.

I would think it would be sensible for the transmitters to all use the
same mplexid/serviceid values throughout the country. So you would
expect to only have different freqid values from one transmitter to
the next. But not having seen anyone else's channel table values
until now, I was not sure if they had been that sensible. When the
transmitters are far enough away from each other, they can also reuse
the same frequencies for transmitting multiplexes, so it is entirely
possible that several transmitters in NZ share the same freqid values
too. I would have thought though, that KauKau and Wharite were a bit
too close to each other for that.

>I'll have a go at this when its not recording. I imagine playing

Yes, it is best to have everything shut down when manually playing
with the database. That includes mythbackend if possible. Wait until
there is nothing going to record and any background jobs have
finished, then run "stop mythtv-backend". Once you have fixed the
database, run "start mythtv-backend". The "start" and "stop" commands
are new in Ubuntu 9.10 - they are part of the new "upstart" startup
system. I have yet to find any documentation on the possible job
names for the stop and start commands. The only thing I have found is
the link names for things in /etc/init.d - anything that is linked to
/lib/init/upstart-job seems to be a job name for the stop and start
commands. Those job names are not the same as the process names
("mythbackend" in this case).

What is the issue that might make it "too close". Are you referring to possible ghosting that would happen with single channel
analogue signals? Seems that is not so much an issue with digital. (Perhaps it is something to do with signal locks?) Or are
there other issues? Maybe historical channel selections / commitments?

Looking at http://lincrad.co.nz/transmittersites.html the Sky Tower Digital channels are different. (28,32 40)

In theory, UHF signals at those frequencies are line-of-sight only. In
practice, there are various ways that the signal can, on occasion,
under the right conditions, bounce and get to places where it should
not get to. When it does, anyone getting both signals on the same
frequency is not going to get good reception, even with a digital
signal. So best practice in assigning frequencies should take that
into account and try to maximise the distance between use of the same
frequencies. Wharite and KauKau are normally high power transmitter
sites, so I am surprised that they were assigned the same frequencies
for the digital multiplexes. I would have thought it better to assign
frequencies used by low power transmitters in each other's area.

OK, I guess predictably this has made a significant difference, multirec provisionally now works to expectation, I've tested
recording all the 50 mux channels simultaneoulsy and they now all come off the first tuner..... All the Live TV channel icons are
also now displaying properly! (Not previoulsy mentioned)

What I did was revise my faulty channel table using the reference data Stephen had kindly provided.

In the end I did it with the backend running but idle, I observed that mythweb saved the sql updates while the backend was running
so I figured they'd be ok while backend did nothing. So far seems reasonable as all looks good following a stop and restart of the
backend and mythfilldatabase.

There were two sets of data, interestingly one of the table fields was last_record which told me which of my channels had been
recording. Running "select * from channel order by name;" the ones that had recorded all had Null mplexid's and serviceid's of 0
which presumably might have something to do with how they reduced multirec to unirec tuning!

Essentially I ran

Mythweb: Add x identifiers into the "name" rows to be deleted - once others updated and noted corrected
Mythweb: Cut n paste the xmltvid's into mythweb and saved. (In hindisght it would probably have been quicker to write out some sql
updates e.g. update channel set xmltvid='tv1.freeviewnz.tv' where channum=1; and paste them en masse)

update channel set tvformat='Default' where tvformat='';

update channel set icon='/home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels/tv_one.jpg' where name='TV One';
update channel set icon='/home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels/tv_2.jpg' where name='TV2';
update channel set icon='/home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels/tv_3.jpg' where name='TV3';
update channel set icon='/home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels/logo-opg-c4-red.png' where name='C4';
update channel set icon='/home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels/maori_tv.jpg' where name='Maori Television';
update channel set icon='/home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels/tvnz_6.jpg' where name='TVNZ 6';
update channel set icon='/home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels/tvnz_7.jpg' where name='TVNZ 7';
update channel set icon='/home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels/freeview_3plus1_logo_107x35.jpg' where name='TV3 PLUS1';
update channel set icon='/home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels/Prime_TV_107x35.jpg' where name='PRIME';
update channel set icon='/home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels/parliament.jpg' where name='Parliament TV';
update channel set icon='/home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels/radio_nz_national.jpg' where name='Radio NZ National';
update channel set icon='/home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels/radio_nz_concert.jpg' where name='Radio NZ Concert';

Following cutting and pasting each sql command into putty I tested pasting multiple rows - which of course processes all n-1
lines.... I suppose a .sh file could be written to just do all this....but so far thats outside my abilities....

update channel set icon='/home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels/chinese.jpg' where name='ChineseTV'; CUSTOM ICON ADDED
update channel set icon='/home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels/base.jpg' where name='BaseFM'; CUSTOM ICON ADDED

it scares the cr*p out of me! Currently, I am happy on dvb-s (and analogue
for Sky) but contemplating making the leap to dvb-t one day.. but it seems
so difficult. With dvb-s, all I need is EIT and/or the tv-grab thing and
it's all good. Easy to set up and very reliable.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how come it's so much harder in the
dvb-t world?

my efforts are minimal when compared to what others have done for open source - and my "helpers"

Its just a part of the nix eternal learning curve....

Yes.

Because the 7 day data is only broadcast on DVB-S and not DVB-T - so it (currently) has to be got from some where else...

I was planning to run up DVB-S sometime for the broadcast EPG data, perhaps someone already runs both simultaneously? Presumably it
works ok? Have you considered this (using both) as an option?

It's not. use tv_grab_pz-py and all will be well.

It's not, just use tv_grab_nz-py as you do with any other source and it
should be fine.
