I'm not in front of my TV at the moment, but from memory it's 576i.
That's tuned from Kaukau in Wellington, but I assume it's the same
everywhere.

One easy way to find out is to play it live - or play a recording in VLC - which will play it at its native resolution for any
particular recording. Its file information will give detailed and perhaps helpful codec information for both video and audio.

I am not sure if mplayer does this so easily.

I do not know however the different programs might be at different resolutions, although the bandwidth may not be there to support
more than 576i.

My observations of DVB-T Prime ("HD" is likely misleading in the title - but then I am not sure you will find an official source
that expresses it that way?) is its quality is superior to SD Prime analogue, however analogue Prime was always inferior to TV3
(which was for me always the best analogue quality).

Video is 720x576 interlaced flagged as 16:9 in the same way as the
freeview MPEG2 satellite stream.

I don't have freeview|HD so thats why it was an "idle query" :)

I was debating with someone whether they got topgear in HD via freeview.

Out if similar interest, what channels on Sky are really HD?

Just for the record, I just ran some DVB-T Prime samples in VLC. Even though
I agree it isn't actually HD, it does have a fairly decent bitrate ( ~
3000kb/s ) given the codec and resolution.

Certainly helps with disk space compared to TV3 recordings.

This is what MediaInfo reports about the last episode of Sea Patrol
(which looks like it is recorded in HD, even if it is not being
broadcast in HD on Prime):

Format : MPEG-TS
File size : 1.24 GiB
Duration : 1h 4mn
Overall bit rate : 2 740 Kbps

Video

For comparison, this is from CSI New York (TV3, HD):

Format : MPEG-TS
File size : 5.79 GiB
Duration : 1h 4mn
Overall bit rate : 12.8 Mbps

Video
ID : 48 (0x30)

Stream size : 178 MiB (3%)

Note the use of High [at] L4 H.264 profile for CSI, versus Main [at] L3 for
Sea Patrol. Main profile is still pretty good at compression, but is
easier on decoders as it requires less computation. High [at] L4 is
using almost all possible compression techniques available in H.264.
And the HD broadcast uses 4 times the number of bits, although it has
only 2.5 times the number of pixels to display.

And this is from Piha Rescue (720p) on TV One, which I believe is
videoed in HD these days:

Format : MPEG-TS
File size : 2.67 GiB
Duration : 35mn 13s
Overall bit rate : 10.8 Mbps

Video
ID : 48 (0x30)

TV One/2/3 are the same level of HD as they are on Freeview.

The other "HD" sky channels are Sky Sports , Sky Moves and Sky Movies
Greats, but some of the material will be upscaled SD like Freeview.
