xmltv

I have both DVB-T and DVB-S cards in my Myth box, and use Freeview only. I
have been happily using EIT data, but have noted comments that some people
have made about xmltv data being superior, so I have downloaded
tv_grab_nz-py and installed it. As far as I got was having it download
channels (not all Freeview channels were listed) and running
mythfilldatabase, but on first test no cards using this source would tune.

Before I go any further, can anyone advise on what makes the xmltv data a
superior solution to just using EIT?

There are also two other possible benefits depending on the source you use:

1. Consistency of title names, so that (for example) House , 'House MD'
and 'Mouse M.D.' all appear the same, which is helpful for series linking.
2. Retrieval of IMDB or other Internet based information.

OK, I've given xlmtv a go and can get it working fine with either DVB-S *or* DVB-T, but trying to get a single guide from xmltv working with both sources is proving a bit problematic. I have created two sources, both using tv_grab_nz-py, but one assigned to my DVB-S card and one assigned to the DVB-T card. I have scanned for channels on the respective sources and downloaded xmltv data, but I get double listings in the guide, problems tuning to some channels, and when I press the channel up/down button during LIveTV it always starts at channel 1 even if I am tuned to, say, channel 10. I'm sure I'm just missing some subtlety in the setup - any advice greatly appreciated. Something I am not clear on is how to handle having both the scanned channels and the xlmtv channles listed against each source - do I keep both and hide one set from the listings, or do I set their callsigns and channel numbers the same and list them both, or what? Thanks in advance.

I don't think this is the case. I get 7 days ahead with EIT. I use an
XML grab for TV One because it breaks out the BBC World programming
which the EIT doesn't (although this seems to have stopped working in
recent weeks).

It's still working.

Looks like some nights it's called BBC World 2009 which it won't replace. If
someone can confirm it's the same scheduling as BBC World then I can make it
so.

How do you get a mixture of EIT and XML? I have tried this but mythtv
got confused (or I didn't set it up correctly) and periods (.) were
inserted instead of the text.

The reason I was trying to obtain a mixture of data streams was because
the data for the radio stations, particularly Radio NZ National and
Concert programmes, are/were missing in the XML grab. I would prefer
the data for these streams to be available in the XML grab, but it
(Radio programme schedule) never shows up in my channel listings after
running mythfilldatabase.

Now you mention it I think the advance listings for some of the radio
stations (including National and Concert) are shorter than for TV
channels. The listings are quite generic too. I haven't checked the
XML feeds for these - do they break out things like Kim Hill and This
Way Up into actual content listings?

you will get 7 days on DVB-S EIT, you won't on DVB-T - you'll only get
next/now. The EPG on DVB-T is based on MHEG not EIT. (For furure
google hounds his comment relates to NZ Freeview only, it is not a
general comment on DVB-S/DVB-T)

How do you get that to work, I use tv_grab_nz-py, should this work
automatically for me?

I find mythweb best for this kind of fiddling, go into tv setup in
mythweb and there is a big table of all your channels. For those you
want EIT, tick the the appropriate box. Also in the setup for your
xmltv grabber make sure you are NOT loading the xmltv info for that
channel. In xmltv_grab_nz-py its as simle as amending the config file.
The format is obvious when you look at it, there a ! or an = in every
line, ! if you don't want the info, = if you do.

Would I be right in thinking these are PIDs 1101, 1102, ????, 1104 for the
epgsnoop config file?

They do stream... (and yes it will use up your monthly bandwidth allowance)
