I too had two instances of Mythfrontend starting up. It was something to do with having two XFCE sessions and autostarting. This caused quite awful audio issues. Both frontends were responding to the remote control, however they would not be 100% in sync with each other, and so i got terrible echo artifacts occuring.

I was never able to resolve the issue properly. In the end i reinstalled Mythbuntu and the issue disappeared.

It's a curly one. XFCE (by default IIRC) will save the running programs when
you log out or shut down. So when you get two front ends running, one starts
as part of this restore, and one starts as part of the usual startup
process.

The way I fixed it was to manually exit the frontend, shut down the computer
and de-select the 'save this session' (or similair option). IIRC, this was
with Mythbuntu 8.10.
