Whats on Sky?

Is any of Sky's HD fare available unencrypted off the satellite? I am
particularly thinking of stuff like TV3.

Also is it DVB-S or S2?

Nothing that I'm aware of unfortunately.

All of their HD channels are in DVB-S2

Sorry for my ignorance, but does this mean that if I enter the correct
frequency, I could get the SBS Brisbane content off the satellite if I
wanted, since these are also free to air and on the same satellite?

Unfortunately not. Each beam of Optus D1 is focused on the specific country,
and you'll need a very large dish to pick up the other countries signal.

Not from NZ. Just because it's the same satellite doesn't mean that the
transmission is receivable - in fact the transmissions are quite
directional. If you have a look at the beam column you'll notice that Sky
and Freeview generally have NZB while Australian channels have NB. Clicking
on these values will show you a map of signal strengths which makes it clear
that there is no chance of picking up a NB signal over here.

Cheers,
Steve

AFAIK only if you have a larger than normal dish (and maybe not even
then), as that transponder is not pointed at NZ.

If you click on the link in the "beam" column on that page you will
see the kind of coverage that transponder is aimed at.

Re: Whats on Sky? [In reply to]

I've got a 3m Andrews solid Al dish that did just that - had it on our
roof LOL. It's for sale if anyone wants it.
