New To List

Hi

This is my introduction email!

My name is Ashley Kirk and I am a systems engineer living in Auckland...

I am planning to build a Freeview DVB-S MythTV system for my boss as a work project and hopefully he will be happily Mything with EPG before too long!

Hence I have joined the list as I havent learned too much yet and might need some help and definitely need to do some more research

I wouldn't say that, there are alternatives :)

Yeah true I know, but the SkyStar is a safe bet. There was one card
that has been reported as not so great. Not inclined at 2.00 pm on a
Friday to trawl the archives to remember which is what!

Or you could get him to buy a working unit from OpenMedia ;)

Steve - this is an off list comment mostly because I don't want to
embarrass you.

Please consider the commercial nature of some of your statements, like the
one above. A smiley face doesn't change what it is.

To be honest - I don't know what the list maintainer's position is on
commercially-biased postings. It would be a good idea for you to discuss
it directly with Nick.

Notice no other commercial operator on the list makes any sort of
reference to their sales functions?

Re: new to list [In reply to]

Hi Ross,

The Nova T 500 should work out of the box on 8.04, and
mythtv-setup (0.21) should be able to tune in to the DVB-T
signal if it's there.
It's possible you don't have a strong enough signal, I have
had trouble with TV3/C4 in the past due to a weak signal.
DVB-T is UHF, so if you get good Prime reception it is
likely you can get DVB-T if available (ironically).
My only other suggestion would be to try tuning it using the
Great Britain setting for tuning.

Once tuned, to view the channels properly you will need to
get Paul Kendall's patched version of MythTV. He has done a
lot of work getting it going for New Zealand's DVB-T and has
an Ubuntu repository.
just add the line:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/paul-kcbbs/ubuntu hardy main
to the end of:
/etc/apt/sources.list
then:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

let us know how you get on.

Good luck, Ken

Re: new to list [In reply to]

Ross,

Have you enabled the on-board Low Noise Amplifier (LNA)?

Directly from the Nova T 500 wiki:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/options
/Add:/ options dvb-usb-dib0700 force_lna_activation=1

Adding that line at the bottom turns on the amplifier, and will
hopefully fix your reception problems.

Let us know how you go with H.264 playback!

Re: new to list [In reply to]

Hi Trev,

Do you mean it will not play the 720p channels at all, ie it just exits, or does it play them badly?

Is there anything in the frontend log?

Which repository are you using and do you have VDPAU enabled?

Cheers

Steve

Subject: [mythtvnz] new to list

Hi,

My name is Trev.  I currently operate a MythTV box at home.  It mostly works but currently will not play DVB-T 720p channels.  TV3 terrestrial (1080i) works great.  I am hoping to find a solution to this problem on this forum and perhaps help others with issues i may have resolved already.

I have a 2400 dual core AMD-64 machine with a NVIDIA 9400 graphics card.  I am running the MythBuntu 9.04 AMD64 OS.

Cheers,
Trev.

Probably worth you taking a run through the archives of this list for the
last month or two as most of your issues have been covered here.

It would be useful to know what you define as "not working".
No Audio?
No Video?
Crashes the frontend?

Welcome aboard, nice to see new users.

Caveat: I know nothing about the hvr4000 so I will proceed on the
basis that it will work OK with linux.

Take a look at these pages:

http://support.openmedia.co.nz/mypvr/?page_id=24
http://support.openmedia.co.nz/mypvr/?page_id=23

For a basic overview.

You also van test with command line tools like dvbtune etc.

Hi Ross,

I have one of these in my PC at home, works ok, both DVB-S and DVB-T,
although scanning for channels doesn't work out of the box...
I made a write-up on my blog about the installation process of updated
drivers...

http://craigosaurous.blogspot.com/2010/04/mythtv-023-and-wintv-hvr-4000.html

It seems a little confusing, but worked in the end...

I'm running myth 0.23 and Mythbuntu 10.04

Cheers,
Craig
