taskbar visible whilst Mythfrontend running

Hi all,

This has been a minor issue for me and I have been putting up with it
because I've been too lazy to write an email. I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04
the other week and since then when I run mythfrontend it doesn't cover
up the taskbar and menubars (at the top and bottom of the screen) like
it used to. This is helpful sometimes if I want to quickly check
something but its a little distracting when you're watching something.
Any ideas whats changed?

Rossco

The most likely change I can think of is that the new version of the
operating system has new graphics drivers with new overscan settings.
Did you use the resize settings in MythTV? If so then you should be able
to reset them and fix the problem.

It's not that at all.

It's Compiz ; either disable Compiz (the GPU accelerated desktop
effect) or check the legacy mode.

Yip you are right. After a little googling to find out what you were
talking about I solved the issue. I had also added a Graphics card to
my system around the time this issue came up and hence installed the
nvidia driver. To fix I installed 'compizconfig-settings-manager' which
isn't installed by default on my system. Go to System > Preferences >
Compiz Settings Manager then under Workarounds I enabled 'Legacy
Fullscreen Support' which seems to have taken the taskbar issue away.

JYA is there any other useful settings I should check?

Not that I can think of...

Compiz without composite enabled doesn't work too well sometimes, and
you need to disable compiz to prevent tearing if using VDPAU...

Why on earth anyone would want compiz on a mythtv box is beyond me anyway!

Re: taskbar visible whilst Mythfrontend running [In reply to]

I use the front end on my Myth box which happens to also be my main working PC.
Since I have a fairly good Graphics card I have enabled the 'flashy' components and have the Compiz enabled. This does have the disadvantage of leaving the task bar visible, but since I use the front end for recording setup etc it isn't an issue for me.

So what you're saying is that if I have Compiz enabled at all I'm going
to get tearing as you helped me get VDPAU running? And hence that I
should disable it? Whats the easiest way of doing that? Removing
compiz in Synaptic?

I wasn't even aware of what it is (I'm still a relative newbie to Linux)
until just recently. I think it was installed by default when I enabled
the nVidia driver or when I upgraded to Jaunty.

your mileage may vary... I have compiz installed on mine with the
legacy fullscreen mode enabled and composite disabled and I don't see
much problems.

But I'm never using the desktop except under very special condition,
so if there's an issue I'm never going to see it.

To disable compiz you just go in the desktop/display settings and you
disable the advanced graphical effects. There's no need to uninstall
anything

I'd say if it works fine for you and you don't notice anything, leave
it as it is
