Sky Sports on Mythtv

Is there a howto and/or list of requirements to legitimately add Sky to
Mythtv for a sky subscriber? I think I read that there is an Aurora
card, but I'm drawing a blank after that. Assuming its ok to ask this
question and not be whapped by the thought police!

Barry

I use the s-video input of a pvr150 card plugged into the s-video output
of the Pace Sky box. An IR blaster to change channel and it works a treat
(as I'm sure it does for all people with an STB). I've given up with the
quality of OTA signals via the tuner on the 150 so I don't get any
conflicts.

Yes, I had not mentioned I had seen this setup, but for discussion sake,
someone is trying to simplify their cupboard down to one device. I
imagine the subscriber will receive the sky box when they join but was
looking for an integrated solution. So is there not a way to get the
digital feed, decoded by a legitimate card? Somewhere in my imagination
is the image of a pci card with a smartcard slot in the back that you
insert your sky card into. Maybe in a British magazine or blog...

Re: Sky Sports on Mythtv [In reply to]

Hi Barry.

At the moment this is not possible. Sky uses a version of encryption
which is customised and different to other providers in the world.
While you are correct that decoder cards with smart card slots exist,
there is currently none which will work for Sky NZ. Do not be fooled
with cards which mention "Sky" as this is often Sky UK who use different
encryption.

The best bet to as Robin suggests, an SVideo feed into a PVR card. I
use a PVR-500 for eg. The only thing to sort out then is the channel
changing via IR diode.

Hope this helps

Dean

Sky in NZ use NDS. NDS has not been hacked so you need a valid Subscription
Card even to start with.
You would need a Smartcard reader (Any smartcard reader will work) to place
your Sky Card in.
You will need software to talk to the smart card reader. There are many
around, but none work with NZ Specific NDS Cards.
The software has to be programmed for the NZ Sky NDS. but talking to the
smart cards is quite simple.
The problem is NDS is quite a bit different to other NDS implementations (as
in the commands to talk to the NDS Card).
No one has written any specific software to talk to NZ SKY NDS Cards.

So.. go back the easiest way.. output from Sky decoder -> Capture Card and
use IRBlaster to change channels.

Thanks

The only legitimate way to do it is via Composite/SVideo from an existing
Sky STB.

The Aurora card is for decoding some Australian Pay TV services and
doesn't apply to Sky.

Your other option is to look at using a SoftCam and card reader to decode
the Sky NDS data stream, but then you are starting to move out of the
legitimate space.

Sadly not possible at present for Sky NZ.

Integrated = MySKY

Other option is use a Dreambox. Note that Sky is putting out a firmware
update this week, and I wonder if it will break the Dreamboxes.

Re: Sky Sports on Mythtv [In reply to]

Which brings us to the most important point...

How much do you want to have to fix this solution?
Anything you do to get Sky working outside of a supported STB will not
be supported by Sky. That means what should something go wrong - you'll
have to put everything back together in order to call the service man
anyway. It's hard to know if it's even supported to bring the sat feed
from a non-Sky dish.

I'd hate to come home one day and find that a change made by Sky caused
me to loose a whole days recordings (and they can change crypto
parameters on the fly, look at what Aussie has been though in the past)

Given that you have a valid subscription anyway (we're not talking about
stealing Sky are we) then just using the STB is not a bad way of doing
things.

Sky HD may change the driver, but thats a while off yet.
