Using VLC with Mythtv and Lirc

Hello everyone,
Has anyone been able to get VLC working fully with Mythtv?
I have managed to get it partly going.
It will play DVD rips, both encrypted and not.
I have modified the .lircrc file to include the key commands for the
various functions (Quit, Stop, Play, Pause, Vol, etc)
However the only keys that appear to work are Quit and Stop.
I have searched the various forums and wiki's and what I can find
implies that I have set it up correctly.
I am running VLC 0.8.2, Lircrc 0.7.2, Mythtv 0.19.20050712-1
Background:
New to Linux, KnoppMyth with a single PVR150 in a Silverstone LC14M
case, running for approx 6 months.
