Compiling mythtv and running without installing.

Hi all,
For the last few weeks I have run into a few bugs with my mythtv
0.24.2 frontend and backend. I have as a Qt developer decided that I
could most likely fix my problems myself (submitting bug reports with
patches) since I regularly fix these types of problems in the day job
(medical imaging research and development). Anyways for the last 3 to
4 years all of the applications I have developed were on the MS
Windows platform in Qt using CMake to generate Visual Studio
2005/2008/2010 32/64 bit projects. Although at times I have ported
parts of my projects to run on linux I have very little experience
with developing/debugging in linux or even with gcc so that will be
somewhat of a hurdle for me.

I have done the following so far:

1. Grabbed the latest git 0.24 fixes into my user folder
$HOME/temp/mythtv (may fork later on github)
2. configured it using the configure command
3. Imported the Makefile project into KDevelop-4.2.3 (I used KDevelop
in the past a little however I am not very familiar with it)
4. Built the project
5. Try to run mythfrontend from the shell possibly without installing
(since I do not want to mess with my production mythtv).

I believe I can easily fix that by extending my LD_LIBRARY_PATH to
include the other mythtv libraries..

I am going to still post this however.

Re: Compiling mythtv and running without installing. [In reply to]

Pardon the top post... sent from my phone.

Just to give you an option since you state you are a vs2010 user. I have
been able to compile and debug Mythbackend and mythfrontend using just
vs2010. It takes a little work to setup but the projects/solution with a
readme is in the packaging git repository.

The version in git is a little out of date. I have the required updates on
my machine and I changed it to run with Qt4.8. I was planning on updating
git once I get the wsdl code fixed, but if you're interested I can seen if I
can get it pushed tomorrow (remote the rest of the day)

Keep in mind I use this environment for development but run my production
system with linux. I just find the visual studio env more productive for me
than gcc / gdb.

David.

Interesting. Yes I am interested. Thanks a lot. I expect I would be
way more productive in Visual Studio since I have 15+ years of
experience developing and debugging with Visual Studio.

Here is what I do to compile and try mythtv on the same machine that
run my production server, so yes, like you I don't want to mess up my
production install.

I compile mythtv like so:

./configure --prefix=/home/jyavenard/build --compile-type=debug

I do make && make install as usual

To run it:

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/home/jyavenard/build/lib
/home/jyavenard/build/bin/mythfrontend

Makes sense to me. Thanks. I will try later.

I know that some people will frown on me giving this info.. But this
is the development mailing list, it supposes you know what you are
doing

However, if you are running a 0.24 production system, and want to
compile master ; you may find yourself with an unworking system
because the database schema has been updated...

For such situation, I compile with:
./configure --prefix=/home/jyavenard/build --compile-type=debug
--extra-cxxflags='-D IGNORE_SCHEMA_VER_MISMATCH
-DIGNORE_PROTO_VER_MISMATCH'

I mostly work with mythavtest for my purpose, so running a 0.25 build
test against a 0.24 backend works fine.
No so when running the fully fleged mythfrontend, LiveTV will not work
at all and neither will playing recordings.
But Videos work

The configure command above ensure that no database will ever be
upgraded when running the test system, and it won't error-out when
running the test build and the version differs.

Good to know. And yes I do understand the implications of this. I have
a similar schema version / database upgrade system in my current
application (medical imaging research) at work. MythTV gave me the
idea to implement that. Anyways, at first I plan to look at a few
current issues I have with 0.24.2 however I may need this in the
future..

Thanks a lot,
John

I have got this method to work without any problems at all.

I've just committed updates to the VS2010 project in the MythTV/Packaging
repository.

This should allow it to compile with the latest MythTV source and has also
change the QT version to 4.8.0.

Let me know if anyone needs help getting it to compile.

David.

Thanks. I will most likely look at this on Saturday or Sunday and
report back my findings..

I looked at this last week but did not check to see that you are
building for win32 instead of x64. I target all my applications for
x64 these days so my 64 bit Qt build dlls would not work. Anyways
house repairs along with long work hours have prevented me from
getting back to this. Maybe next weekend if it rains.
