there are a whole raft of similar bugs in trac.
if the devs want me to go through them all and collate then i will.

my theory (other than dinosaurs being thin at one end, getting much
bigger in the middle and then thin at the other end) is that there is an
optimization in the code (probably there to speed up channel changing)
which means that the set of operations to start recording/stop recording
are different/a superset than those performed when changing channels.
something in these optimizations cause the tuner to choke.

does it do something like pause the tuner and then unpause it; rather
than completely stop and restart it? i do remember that some tuners
can't really do that very well.
