frontend not connecting to backend

When I can get mythbackend to to stay running for a few minutes, if I
start mythfrontend, it says:
Connecting to backend server: localhost:6543
Could not connect to backend server
I left the backend....txt file as is with the exception of changing the
ip address to : localhost
Any ideas?
