FWIW, the entire OSD is being rewritten right now ( http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/browser/branches/libmythui-osd ), and I'm sure the current (extremely-low-level) code that handles caption/subtitle drawing will be modified to use the higher-level approach provided by mythui. Therefore--unless Mark K. disagrees--you should probably direct any efforts at improving subtitles/captions toward that branch, once that branch has usable renderers for your testing. (Though if you find a non-intrusive change for a small bug that fixes the issue, I'm sure it will be applied to -fixes. Anything more than a little change, however, is likely to be thrown away with the old OSD/caption/subtitle code.)
