That's common of nearly all PC-based sound cards--due to Intel's AC'97
and Intel HDA specs. You have to choose /very/ carefully to find a
sound card that supports 44.1kHz or 32kHz in non-audio/data mode.

If you change "Digital output device" to "ALSA:spdif" but leave "Audio
output device" at "ALSA:default", does it work?
