So, Bill, even with the modifications--with the patch

--it didn't prevent the defunct processes?

Nevermind. I just got verification from the other user who previously
reported that it worked that the defunct processes came back.

Your libudev approach may be the best solution since it gets rid of the
need to call external binaries. I'll let Nigel (
