I can confirm this problem on a AMD64 3000+ single core machine.

This is a problem with the latest series of nvidia drivers (169.XX).
If you revert to an older version it should work again.

I've been looking at it for a few weeks but have so far drawn a blank.

I recently updated to 169.XX and have the problem that xrandr only
works once. After that the resolution stays at the video playback
setting the whole time until I restart X. Using the command line tool
works an arbitrary number of times until it has stopped working in
Myth at which point it silently fails to alter the resolution.

Hope this isn't a thread hijack but a related issue!
