To continue this discussion a little:
There are, however, a number of things in the frontend that
assume the backend and other resources will be available -
causing the UI to be occasionally non-responsive when it
could at least exit to the menu. Of course, a patch for any
specific instances of this behavior would be a good thing.
To trace down these instances, follow the instructions at
http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-22.html#ss22.2
to generate a few backtraces of different sessions which
have "locked up".
It should then be possible to find the threads that are
blocking the UI, I would hope.
